🚑 Study Alert: Pediatric Renal Trauma Imaging 🚨

🔍 Objective: To investigate if children with kidney injuries get proper scans before transfer to top-tier trauma centers, as per 📋 AUA Urotrauma guidelines (IV contrast CT w/ immediate and delayed images)

👨‍🔬 Researchers: Christopher J. Loftus, MD, et al.
📅 Published: Oct 20, 2023
🔗 DOI: [10.1016/j.urology.2023.08.051](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.urology.2023.08.051)

💡 Key Findings:
- Only 31% of kids at transferring hospitals received recommended imaging vs. 82% at trauma centers.
- Incomplete initial scans led to more CTs and surgery upon transfer.

📈 Stats & Impact:
- 67% of 293 children were transferred without complete imaging.
- This resulted in unnecessary radiation from additional CT scans.

👩‍⚕️ Conclusion:
Urgent need to follow Urotrauma guidelines to prevent overexposure to radiation and ensure optimal care.

🚨 New Study Highlights: Pediatric Splenic Trauma Management 🚨

Are kids with splenic injuries getting the best care possible? A recent study dives into USA trends in treatment. Here’s what they found:

👶 The study analyzed 8,296 pediatric blunt splenic injury (BSI) cases from 2012 to 2019.
🏥 Majority (74.3%) were treated at non-pediatric hospitals.
🩺 Nonoperative management was used in 96.3% of cases, with only 2.5% needing angioembolization.
🔬 Despite recommendations, kids at adult hospitals were 3x more likely to undergo a splenectomy compared to those at children’s hospitals.

🔍New Study Alert: The Obesity Paradox in Pediatric Trauma Patients🩺

Recent findings from the Journal of Pediatric Surgery highlight a fascinating trend: Obesity might actually have a protective effect on mortality among pediatric trauma patients.

📊Study Highlights:
1. Out of 161,458 patients, 23% were classified as obese.
2. Overall mortality for the study group was 1.13%.
3. The lowest mortality rate? Found in the obese group.
4. Obese patients also showcased better secondary outcomes such as injury severity score (ISS). However, they had longer hospital stays and higher transfer rates to rehabilitation.

This challenges our understanding of obesity’s impact on health, especially in trauma scenarios. More research is needed to delve into the complexities of body weight and health outcomes.

Our lab screened more than 6471 articles about training technologies and their feasibility in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We found that the most common technologies used in trauma training were high-fidelity mannequins, video-assisted debriefing, and low-fidelity mannequins. However, we found that these technologies were not well-suited for LMICs due to poor scores in categories such as production, maintenance, cost, and reusability. Our study also found that virtual simulation and digital courses had better feasibility scores, but were not as commonly used in trauma training. We conclude that, given the urgent need for pediatric trauma training in LMICs, educators should use technologies that optimize learning outcomes and are feasible for low-resource settings. That’s why one of the PeTIT VR objectives is to democratize pediatric trauma education.

Pediatric trauma kills one million children worldwide each year and is the leading cause of childhood mortality and disability in several countries. The most significant errors in pediatric trauma care are consistently related to a lack of proper communication and leadership. Such errors can lead to misdiagnosis, even in common situations such as shock or intra-abdominal injuries.

Petit - Pediatric Trauma Innovative Training is a global pediatric trauma community that intends to fill this critical gap in pediatric trauma education. Here you will find articles about pediatric trauma, case discussions, and updates about our virtual reality platform - Petit VR (visit our website: petitvr.com). Stay tuned!
