What are some benefits of Music Therapy Support Groups?

I provide Music Therapy support groups for adults. Groups are formed based on shared personal challenges such as grief, anxiety, physical pain, sexual violence, or living with cancer. Here are some benefits of making music with others in a support group!

1. A safe therapeutic environment:
โ€ข A music therapist maintains emotional safety for clients by communicating and maintaining group boundaries. This may include preventing criticism, advice-giving, breaches of confidentiality, and music or sharing that might cause re-traumatization.

2. Healing relationships:
โ€ข When our sense of safety in relationships is lost, positive experiences of connection are needed to restore it. Music facilitates empathy, support and fun! This reminds us that there are others in the world who understand and who care.

3. Validation:
โ€ข For every challenge, there is a song. Or if not, we can write one! I canโ€™t think of a more powerful source of validation, than having a whole group sing about a shared challenge.

4. Collaboration:
โ€ข Hardship has a way of making people feel alone. Making music with others creates a shared sense of accomplishment and overcoming. Especially if youโ€™re scared of making music!

5. Shared Learning:
โ€ข Others in the group will share songs and uses of music that have helped them. Since they are going through a similar challenge, some of what has helped them may help you.

6. Empowerment
โ€ข How would it feel to see the shyest, most scared and timid person in the group boldly burst into a song about their recovery? People who have shared hardship often encourage each other in ways no one else can.
