Chères clientes, chers clients et aux tout-petits que j'accompagne,

Je serai en congé de maternité à la fin du mois de mai, avec un retour prévu pour les soins en ostéopathie autour de mars/avril 2023.

En espérant que le Canada prenne rapidement example sur cette nouvelle législation:

- aucun sommeil incliné (risque d'asphyxie positionnelle)

- aucun tour de lit (risque d'étranglement et de suffocation)

Victory for families and safe sleep advocates! Last night, the U.S. Senate passed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act which bans infant inclined sleep products and padded crib bumper pads which have led to dozens of infant deaths. This bill passed in the U.S. House last year. Thank you to the parent-advocates, safe sleep groups, and lawmakers that made this possible!

It's refreshing to read a rather well- balanced article on restrictive tongue ties.
Although there are a few inaccuracies (what matters most isn't the capacity to stick out the tongue but to placate it up against the palate; a tie cannot be stretched, only the surrounding soft tissue can), it's worth a read!

Decades ago, tongue tie was considered to be one thing: a tight band connecting the tip of the tongue to the top of the gumline. I often get the same look too when I lift up a baby's tongue to observe if there is a restriction...
The primary role of the tongue in sucking, swallowing, face formation, breathing ... has remained unchanged. Groups of researchers are just trying to further the understanding of the mechanics of it all.

Fad? Dare I say not!

This picture is taken from the Obladen 2010 paper discussing the history of tongue tie. The pictures are from woodcuts by Fabricius and Scultetus in 1620 and 1666 respectively. In 500 years, little has changed - the instrument used to pick up the tongue looks identical to what is depicted here AND the babies are giving these surgeons the same look they give me.

Some much-needed regulations coming soon in the USA for sleepers. Many are nothing short of death traps.

Regulations also coming soon for mattresses (for cribs, bassinets, etc.).

I hope these regulations will be immediately followed open here in Canada.

There is no surface that is safe for sleep apart from a regulated crib mattress (or bassinet or pack and play mattress). It might look "uncomfortable" because of its stiffness, but that is voluntary and tested to avoid any positional asphyxiation, or suffocation upon rolling on stomach.
