🧬 Did you know that more than 6,000 Quebecers have been affected by a rare and often overlooked condition called localized scleroderma (or morphea)?

To mark , researchers at The Institute are raising awareness about this chronic autoimmune disease, which causes painful skin thickening, functional impairment, and visible changes.

🔍 A landmark new study, led by Dr. Elena Netchiporouk, dermatologist at the MUHC and scientist at The Institute, presents the first detailed population-based analysis of localized scleroderma in Quebec. Published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas, the study draws on 30 years of healthcare data.

Findings show the disease affects women three times more often than men, especially those aged 60–79. The team also identified hotspots in southern Quebec, pointing to possible environmental or genetic factors.
📉 Diagnoses increased until 2004, then plateaued, and began declining after 2013.

🧪 New Study Alert! 🧪

Researchers at The Institute have identified a unique immune response in the lungs that may help prevent tuberculosis (TB) infection in high-risk individuals. 🦠🛡️

Led by Erwin Schurr, PhD, this study—published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation —uncovers a potential mechanism of resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The findings shed light on why some people with HIV remain uninfected despite repeated exposure.

In Montreal, tuberculosis (TB) cases rose by 54% in 2024 compared to the 2010–2023 average according to a recent call for vigilance by Montreal's public health department. 📈 This reminds us that TB remains a threat, especially with the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB, which resists standard treatments.

The results of the VQUIN MDR clinical trial conducted by a team from the University of Sydney in collaboration with Dick Menzies, MD, Marcel Behr, MD, Andrea Benedetti, PhD, and graduate student Ori Solomon from , demonstrates that levofloxacin could safely prevent MDR TB. These findings, published in the The New England Journal of Medicine, represent a promising step in reversing the global spread of TB. 🌐
