And one more to round out Speech and Hearing month, although we are into June already.... Last week, as an SLP, I:

- Did a one-one-one parent training session in Spanish (mostly using an app, but also using my can't-conjugate-verbs Spanish)

- Helped FOUR little friends who stutter to find their voice and communicate all of their thoughts!

- Handed out frozen yogurt at my child's school (nothing to do with being an SLP, but I am a mom, and that's important too!)

This week, as an SLP:

- I assessed twins under 2 years of age at the same time (to accommodate the family)!

- I stopped a session early, because the child communicated that she was tired and I wanted to respect that

- I helped parents adjust our expectations for a child who was becoming very frustrated when no one understood him.

This week, as an SLP, I:

- forged relationships with my autistic clients by learning about their interests

- Met with a mother online to provide strategies for stimulating language and communication goals

- Conducted an assessment in Mandarin using an online interpretation application called BoostLingo

- Used an augmentative and alternative communication device to help a non-speaking client communicate with me that he had fallen off the slide at school

I am a fan of Love on the Spectrum, mostly because I see so much of my clients in the individuals on the show, and in their parents. I am aware of the pitfalls as well, not all autistic people are represented here, etc. But I was curious to hear the experience of these now-adults when they were children. Here is a podcast episode with Connor and Tanner's mothers, with everyone talking about their experience. I found it to be an interesting listen, I hope you do too!

In this time of dangerous messages out there being spread about autism, and given my love for my autistic clients:

I keep meaning to make a video, but life keeps getting in the way!

I am making the SHIFT towards Neurodiversity-affirming practices, more and more every day. And part of that was attending a conference given by Cari Ebert Seminars last week in Sarnia, Ontario! Cari is amazing and packed my brain SO FULL of things to think about. Can't wait to share with all of your children in my office. Parents, please ASK me about what I learned so that we can make the shift together!

Each Autistic person has needs and challenges unique to them and collaborative care is key to helping reach their individual goals.

As professionals who have specialized knowledge in the assessment and treatment of communication and social interaction, S-LPs play an essential role in a collaborative care team supporting Autistic individuals and their families.

I finally saw Rose and The Machine last night, a play (only in French? not sure) about a mother's experience in Quebec with an autistic child. It was excellent. Although we do not live in an ideal world, my wish is that every person can open their heart a bit more and have a more inclusive mindset when interacting with, or about, autistic individuals.
