What's more therapeutic or even "feel good" than getting lost in time doing something you enjoy?

Even though it’s easier said than done, this is a great reminder to reread.
Hats off to all the people caring for a loved one. It is HARD, It is EXAUSTING but if you are doing it it’s because your love for them is bigger than this. They may not be able to Thankyou but be sure that if they could, if they understood… they would!
Through it all though, take a break. Ask for help.

My three year old surprised me once while having a tantrum. He used the breathing technique I had told him to use when crying of anger. It worked. 👍

The importance of teaching our children about emotion recognition!
What’s the emotion?
Describe the emotion.
If negative, Do we wish to change this emotion?

The best way to learn is through play so making activities around an educational thematic could really be beneficial.

Once a week, let’s say on a Saturday morning add the ‘Calm Down Cards for Kids’ as a 10 minute activity.
Practice all 6 boxes through the act of pretend (for some, unless you want to carry out the activity). The benefit will be seen throughout the day when a meltdown kicks in, you will revert to this activity in order to help them calm down.

“I can see you’re upset because you wanted to keep playing outside, should we do one last exercise? Let’s pretend to be a sloth”. (Sloth activity reference in image attached below).

Eventually children will identify their own emotion and automatically use a calming technique when needed.

Grasp their attention with this short exercise grid, just add some background music they love and turn this into an enjoyable morning activity to look forward too.
And let’s be honest, you probably need a few stretches too so win-win!

Do they lack motivation doing it? Are they saying they can’t do it before even trying? focusing on their illness, taking it too seriously…
Divert their mindset while validating their thoughts and feelings.

´mom, don’t go too fast you’re going to fly away!’ (Turn it amusing)
‘Dad, we’re going to do this movement 10 times just follow me…’ ( be the guide & correct & incourage throughout)
‘Did you know arthritis touched X people ? You’re not alone. Try doing this movement for 2 minutes every morning before getting out of bed, it’ll warm you up!’ (educational)

Simple et efficace !
Attirez leur attention avec cette courte grille d'exercices, ajoutez simplement de la musique de fond qu'ils aiment et transformez cela en une activité matinale agréable à anticiper également.
Et soyons honnêtes, vous avez probablement aussi besoin de quelques étirements, donc gagnant-gagnant !

Manquent-ils de motivation pour le faire ? Sont-ils en train de dire qu'ils ne peuvent pas le faire avant même d'avoir essayé ? se focalisent-ils sur leur maladie, se prennent t’ils trop au sérieux…
Détournez leur état d'esprit tout en validant leurs pensées et leurs sentiments.

"Maman, ne va pas trop vite, tu vas t'envoler !" (Rends-le amusant)
« Papa, nous allons faire ce mouvement 10 fois, suis-moi simplement… » (soyez le guide, corrigez et encouragez tout au long)
‘Saviez-vous que l’arthrite touchait X personnes ? Tu n'es pas seul. Essayez de faire ce mouvement pendant 2 minutes tous les matins avant de vous lever, ça vous réchauffera ! » (éducatif)

If you are caring for a loved one who has dementia you are most probably familiar with agitation and aggressivety.
It’s hard to constantly be in intervention mode since there is no reasoning to be done.
Some days are good and they give you hope!
Some days are bad, some days are unbearable.
Hygiene becomes a battle,
Feeding requires a lawyers persuasion skills,
Safety watch is ongoing…

By adding a scheduled routine to their day you would be helping yourself in the long run with the progression of the disease.
Schedule morning and afternoon activities, it centers the person in the moment while working on maintaining a skill AND allows you to maintain control in the safe environment you have created.

Example of activities to adapt according to abilities:
Morning activity can include a 20 minute exercise (stretches, passing a ball etc), bocce game

Afternoon activity: walk/stroll or painting or culinary

Evening activity: folding towels, prayers on CD, relaxation setup

Merveilleuse activité ! Le beau temps se lève lentement et presque tout le monde est prêt à mettre son nez dehors !
Excellente activité pour les enfants mais aussi avec un groupe plus âgé 😉 allez vous promener avec un parent/grand-parent qui a besoin d'une stimulation mentale et adaptez-la à ses capacités de compréhension actuelles.
Vous pouvez avoir un être cher dont la réponse semble être une fin muette, mais selon le niveau auquel il se trouve, une petite stimulation vaut mieux que rien.

Oh avez-vous vu cet oiseau?
Wow regardez les arbres en fleurs !
Je ne peux pas reconnaître la couleur sur cette fleur, n'est-ce pas ?

Wonderful activity ! Beautiful weather is creeping up slowly and just about anyone is ready to poke their nose outside!
Great activity for kids but also with an older group 😉 go for a walk with a parent/grandparent that needs some mental stimulation and adapt this to their current comprehension capabilities.
You may have a loved one that getting a response from seems like a mute end but depending of what level they’re at a little stimulation is better than none.

It’s all about the approach! it might not be a magical solution but it SURE CAN HELP. Trying to get someone living with dementia to cooperate can be a real rollercoaster of emotions, at times one step forward and 3 steps back.
The main key to successful Interventions lies within your knowledge of the disease. Regarding the approach to use you need to try try try until you get the right approach right. The bright side is if one approach fails you can try again in a few minutes like if it were the first time 💪

Remember that every person living with this disease will not respond the same way.

And DO NOT take anything said or done personally, if today your loved one decides it’s a day to call you every name in the swear book just let them have their moment…you’ll likely get on their good side quicker by agreeing with them 🥲

Positive Affirmations and self care go together like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
Being able to recognize your emotions and taking action according to them is something to learn young, and no, kids are never to young to learn something.

Self-care achieves the following:
Decreases stress and anxiety
Improves physical health
Boosts self-esteem
Protects mental health
Fosters healthy relationships

🏋️‍♀️Activity ideas to encourage discussion🪁
•Teatime or Hot coco time
•Evening walk/biking
•Fun unique activity like making a kite and flying a kite
•Going on an adventure by taking public transport!

So, Let’s talk about you!
What words would you use to describe yourself?
What words do your children use to describe themselves?
POSITIVE affirmation is a seed within that can only grow 🌱

when repeated regularly either to yourself or out loud, affirmations can change negative thoughts and behavior patterns. It can serve as a motivating or reducing tool, help in difficult moments, boost one’s confidence and overall improve one’s well being!

Here below are a few examples of different types of positive affirmations.
