Meet Fay Nugent, who faced a daunting obstacle in her daily life: a fear of escalators. Stemming from her fear of heights, this phobia became increasingly debilitating after a weekend getaway with friends where climbing poles and walking on ropes triggered an overwhelming fear that lasted for two decades.

In 2018, a ray of hope emerged when Nugent learned about a groundbreaking clinical trial at Oxford University. Researchers were utilizing virtual reality (VR) technology as a therapeutic tool for phobias.

Equipped with a VR headset, individuals immersed themselves in scenarios that triggered their phobias, with the ability to pause or step away if needed. This unique blend of physical, virtual, and imaginary experiences combined to reshape their perceptions and empower logical responses.

Read on to discover how VR technology has helped Fay in dealing with her fear.
