🟧 Le 30 septembre, la Journée nationale de la Vérité et de la réconciliation rend hommage aux survivantes et survivants des pensionnats et à leurs communautés.

À l’Institut, nous contribuons à cet effort de différentes façons. Parmi elles, le projet MISI (Mentorat Intégral pour la Science Inclusive) soutient les étudiants et étudiantes autochtones en recherche en santé grâce à des bourses, du mentorat et de la formation en recherche et leadership inclusif. Cet été, deux stagiaires autochtones se sont joints au programme.

🎓 Parmi eux, Kane Phillips, membre de la Nation Kanien'kehà:ka (Mohawk) de Kahnawà:ke et étudiant au collège John Abbott, voit son domaine comme une façon de renforcer la santé communautaire : « Les communautés autochtones ont besoin de soutien pour aborder la santé mentale et la revitalisation culturelle, et je veux m'assurer que leurs perspectives soient prises en compte. »

🟧 On September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours residential school survivors and their communities.

At The Institute, we contribute in many ways. One example is the MISI Project (Integral Mentorship for Inclusive Science), which supports Indigenous students in health research with scholarships, mentorship and training in inclusive research and leadership. This summer, two Indigenous trainees joined the program.

🎓 One of them, Kane Phillips of the Kanien'kehà:ka (Mohawk) Nation of Kahnawà:ke and a student at John Abbott College, sees his field as a way to strengthen community health: “Indigenous communities require support in addressing mental health and cultural revival, and I aim to help ensure their perspectives are considered.”

🧠✨ Saviez-vous qu’il est désormais possible d’étudier une maladie génétique rare grâce à des « minicerveaux » cultivés en laboratoire?

Une équipe dirigée par Wei-Hsiang Huang, Ph. D., a créé les premiers modèles de « minicerveaux » atteints du syndrome de Smith-Magenis, une maladie génétique rare qui perturbe le développement précoce du cerveau.

En utilisant des cellules souches dérivées de patientes et patients, l’équipe a pu reproduire en 3D les premières étapes du développement cérébral et révéler comment cette maladie entraîne des symptômes tels que déficience intellectuelle, traits du spectre de l’autisme, troubles du sommeil et crises d’épilepsie.

🧠✨ Did you know scientists can now study a rare genetic disorder using lab-grown “mini-brains”?

A team led by Wei-Hsiang Huang, PhD, has created the first-ever “mini-brain” models of Smith-Magenis syndrome, a rare genetic condition that disrupts early brain development.

By generating 3D organoids from patient-derived stem cells, the team recreated the brain’s earliest stages and uncovered how this disorder leads to symptoms such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum features, sleep disturbances, and seizures.

Du 25 au 28 août, L’Institut a accueilli l’École d’été MISI – Relier la science et l’inclusion, organisée par l’équipe ÉDI et le CDFA. Pendant trois jours, chercheuses, chercheurs, stagiaires et membres de la communauté ont échangé sur l’équité, le sexe et le genre ainsi que sur les partenariats avec les Autochtones.
L’objectif : soutenir la réussite des femmes, des étudiantes et étudiants autochtones et racisés, et donner à toutes et à tous des outils concrets pour transformer leur milieu de recherche.

🔬 Nouvel espoir pour les patients atteints d’un cancer de la prostate! Une équipe de recherche de L’Institut, dirigée par Simone Chevalier, Ph. D. et Armen Aprikian, M.D., a mis au point une approche prometteuse qui pourrait transformer la façon d’évaluer l’agressivité de ce cancer.

🧬 En analysant l’ARN sanguin, l’équipe a identifié des signatures génétiques distinctes qui pourraient aider les cliniciennes et cliniciens à prédire quels patients présentent un risque plus élevé de progression.

🔬 New hope for prostate cancer patients! A research team at The Institute, led by Simone Chevalier, PhD and Armen Aprikian, MD, has developed a promising new approach to better assess how aggressively prostate cancer may progress.

🧬 By analyzing blood RNA, the team identified distinct genetic signatures that could help clinicians predict which patients are at higher risk of disease progression.

💬 “Capturing tumour biology from just a few cancer cells and extracellular vesicles in the bloodstream is challenging but also incredibly powerful,” said Seta Derderian, first author of the paper.

🔬 Un organe sur puce qui prédit la réponse à la chimiothérapie

Que faire quand la chimiothérapie fonctionne pour certains patients atteints de cancer avancé… mais pas pour d’autres? Jusqu’ici, les cliniciens n’avaient aucun moyen de le savoir à l’avance.

Des chercheurs dirigés par Lorenzo Ferri, M.D., Ph. D., à L’Institut, et Donald Ingber, M.D., Ph. D., au Wyss Institute de l’Université Harvard, changent la donne. Ensemble, ils ont mis au point un organe sur puce qui recrée le cancer d’un patient et ses tissus environnants afin de prédire avec précision la réponse au traitement.

🔬 An organ chip that predicts chemotherapy response

What if physicians could know beforehand whether chemotherapy would help a patient with advanced cancer? Until now, that hasn’t been possible.

A team led by Lorenzo Ferri MD PhD, at The Institute, and Donald Ingber, M.D., Ph.D. Wyss Institute at Harvard University, may have found the answer. They have developed an organ-on-a-chip that recreates a patient’s tumour and surrounding tissues to predict how it will respond to treatment.

🧬 This breakthrough in precision oncology could spare patients ineffective therapies and guide them to the options most likely to succeed—directly improving clinical outcomes.

💬 “This is the first time we have been able to reproduce, outside the body, not only a person’s cancer but also its microenvironment, in a way that predicts treatment response very precisely,” says Dr. Ferri.

👏 Félicitations à Wei-Hsiang Huang, Ph. D., scientifique à L’Institut et professeur adjoint au Centre de recherche en neurosciences de l’Université McGill! Il vient de recevoir le prestigieux Prix nouveau chercheur principal en génétique Maud Menten, décerné par l’Institut de génétique des IRSC.

🔬 Ce prix national souligne l’excellence de chercheuses et chercheurs en début de carrière qui font avancer le domaine de la génétique. Nommé en l’honneur de la Dre Maud Menten, pionnière canadienne en sciences biomédicales, il rappelle notamment la célèbre équation de Michaelis–Menten.

Le Pr Huang a été primé pour son projet financé par les IRSC sur le syndrome de Smith-Magenis, qui explore comment certaines variations génétiques perturbent le développement et les fonctions du cerveau.
