🧬 Une étude internationale menée sous la direction de Benjamin M. Smith, MD, M.Sc., propose un moyen simple d’évaluer comment les expériences vécues au début de la vie influencent la santé tout au long de la vie.

Publiée dans Communications Medicine, l’étude présente l’indice « height-GaP », qui compare la taille adulte observée à celle prédite par la génétique.

🌍 À partir de données de cohortes internationales, l’équipe montre que cet indice reflète l’effet cumulatif de l’adversité liée à la croissance en début de vie et peut aider à prédire la santé plus t**d, y compris le risque de mortalité.

🧬 A new international study led by Benjamin M. Smith, MD, M.Sc., has developed a simple way to assess how early-life experiences influence health across the life course.

Published in Communications Medicine, the study introduces height-GaP, a measure comparing adult height with genetically predicted height.

🌍 Using international cohort data, the research team shows that height-GaP reflects the cumulative impact of early-life growth adversity and may help predict later-life health, including mortality risk.

Une équipe internationale dirigée par Gabriella Gobbi, M.D., Ph. D., scientifique principale à L’Institut, a obtenu un financement hautement concurrentiel dans le cadre de l’appel d’offres conjoint transnational 2025 de l’Alliance européenne de recherche sur les maladies rares (Erdera) 🌍

🔬 Le projet vise le développement préclinique d’un traitement novateur, premier de sa catégorie, pour le trouble du spectre de l’autisme associé au syndrome de l’X fragile et au syndrome de Phelan-McDermid.

🏆 Seuls 18 projets ont été sélectionnés à l’échelle internationale, marquant la première cohorte soutenue par le nouveau cadre transnational de l’ERDERA, axé sur une collaboration scientifique internationale renforcée.

🔬 The project focuses on the preclinical development of a novel, first-in-class therapy for autism spectrum disorder associated with Fragile X syndrome and Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

🏆 Only 18 projects were selected worldwide, forming the first cohort supported under ERDERA’s new transnational framework designed to accelerate rare disease therapy development through strong international collaboration.

🥜 Une nouvelle étude menée par l’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants - Montreal Children's Hospital et SickKids montre qu’une immunothérapie orale à faible dose pourrait offrir une protection comparable au traitement standard, avec moins d’effets secondaires.

💬 « L'étude a révélé que de très petites quantités d'arachides, associées à moins de réactions, pourraient être utilisées aussi efficacement que de grandes quantités pour l'immunothérapie orale, ce qui la rendrait plus sûre et accessible à un plus grand nombre de Canadiens, même ceux qui sont très sensibles à l'allergène », déclare Moshe Ben-Shoshan, M.D., spécialiste en allergologie et immunologie pédiatrique à l’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants et chercheur au Programme en maladies infectieuses et immunité en santé mondiale de L’Institut.

🥜 New research led by the Montreal Children’s Hospital and SickKids suggests that low-dose peanut oral immunotherapy may provide similar protection to standard treatment, with fewer side effects.

💬 “The study found that very small amounts of peanuts, that are associated with fewer reactions, could be used as effectively as large amounts for oral immunotherapy, making it safer and accessible to more Canadians, even those who are very sensitive to the allergen,” says Moshe Ben-Shoshan, MD, pediatric allergy and immunology specialist at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and researcher in the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at The Institute.

🔬 Améliorer les soins de santé en milieu carcéral grâce aux données probantes

Deux études publiées dans The Lancet, sous la direction de Nadine Kronfli, analysent des lacunes importantes en matière de soins liés aux ITSS et à l’hépatite en milieu carcéral et proposent des pistes fondées sur des données probantes pour améliorer les services de santé.

🧪 Publiée dans The Lancet Public Health, la première étude, dont la première auteure est Gabrielle Beaudry, présente la première r***e systématique rigoureuse et méta-analyse des ITSS bactériennes chez les populations incarcérées, soulignant les bénéfices d’un dépistage et d’un traitement en temps opportun.

🔬 Improving prison health care through global evidence

Two studies published in The Lancet, led by Nadine Kronfli, examine critical gaps in STI and hepatitis care in prison settings and identify evidence-based solutions to strengthen health services.

🧪 Published in The Lancet Public Health, the first study, first authored by Gabrielle Beaudry, presents the first rigorous systematic review and meta-analysis of bacterial STIs among incarcerated populations, highlighting the benefits of timely testing and treatment.

🌍 The second study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases and first authored by Akhil Garg, outlines the first global best practice guidelines for viral hepatitis care in prisons, developed through a systematic review and a GRADE process with international experts.

🌫️ Les effets de la pollution atmosphérique pourraient-ils aller jusqu’à modifier le système immunitaire ? De plus en plus de données suggèrent que ses risques dépassent largement la santé pulmonaire et cardiaque.

🔬 Publiée dans Rheumatology, une étude de l’Université McGill établit un lien entre l’exposition aux particules fines et des modifications du système immunitaire associées à l’apparition de maladies auto-immunes. À partir de données de l’Ontario, les chercheurs ont observé une association avec un biomarqueur lié notamment au lupus systémique.

💬 « Ces résultats nous aideront à comprendre comment la pollution atmosphérique pourrait déclencher des modifications du système immunitaire associées à des maladies auto-immunes », explique Sasha Bernatsky, M.D., Ph. D., scientifique principale au Programme en maladies infectieuses et immunité en santé mondiale de L’Institut. « Nous savons que certains facteurs génétiques jouent un rôle dans les maladies auto-immunes, mais ils n’expliquent pas tout. »

🌫️ Could air pollution affect the immune system? Growing evidence suggests that its health risks extend well beyond the lungs and heart.

🔬 Published in Rheumatology, a McGill University study links exposure to fine air pollution particles with immune system changes associated with autoimmune disease. Using data from Ontario, researchers observed an association with a biomarker linked to conditions such as systemic lupus.

💬 “These results point us in a new direction for understanding how air pollution might trigger immune system changes that are associated with autoimmune disease,” said Sasha Bernatsky, MD, PhD, Senior Scientist in the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at The Institute. “We know some genetic factors play a role in autoimmune disease, but they don’t tell the whole story.”

🚀 Le Startup Demo Day 2025 de la Fondation Hôpital général de Montréal, Montreal General Hospital Foundation (FHGM), tenu au CLIP, a réuni chercheuses et chercheurs, cliniciennes et cliniciens, entrepreneures et entrepreneurs ainsi que investisseuses et investisseurs autour de technologies émergentes en santé.

💡L'étape finale du Programme d’investissement d’impact de la FHGM, l’événement a permis de retenir trois jeunes entreprises en technologies médicales pour un éventuel investissement.

📈 Lancé par la FHGM, ce programme offre des prêts convertibles à des entreprises en démarrage accompagnées par le CLIP, avec des rendements réinvestis dans de futures innovations en santé.

🚀 The Fondation Hôpital général de Montréal, Montreal General Hospital Foundation (MGHF) Startup Demo Day 2025, held at the CLIP, brought together researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs and investors around emerging health technologies.

💡 The final stage of the MGHF Impact Investment Program, the event led to the selection of three early-stage health-tech startups for possible impact investment.

📈 Launched by the MGHF, the program provides convertible loans to startups supported through the CLIP incubator, generating returns that can be reinvested in future health-tech ventures.
