Cravings and Urge Surfing

It’s 7 pm and you have just finished a delicious dinner and feeling satiated and proud of your food choices. Then, a strong urge or craving to eat something unhealthy starts. You want some ice cream or chocolate chip cookies or another glass of wine. Rather than giving in to an unwanted urge, you ride it out, like a surfer riding a wave. Called urge surfing this technique helps you gain control over your impulses. Here’s how to ride the wave:

1. Trigger: Acknowledge/recognize you are having an urge.
2. Rise: Notice and observe any physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Remind yourself that an urge is a feeling and not a “must”, remember you just ate… The urge is temporary. It will pass. Some discomfort is okay.
3. Peak: Picture yourself riding the wave, allowing it to peak without giving in to it. Studies show urges usually pass in about 40 minutes.
4. Fall: Once the wave subsides and the craving passes, take a moment to reflect on how you rode the wave and know that you can manage strong impulses and urges.

Wikipedia’s Definition of Neuroplasticity: the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization.

What does neuroplasticity have to do with breaking bad habits? Here’s my layman’s explanation. Our brains like to take the path of least resistance. When presented with a choice, it likes to take the path well travelled (the habit) because it uses less energy and the neurons are already there. The brain already knows its way and it is a “no brainer”.

When you deviate from your old habits and start to do something new on a consistent basis, you are essentially growing new neural connections and pruning the old ones. So that eventually the new path (well travelled), the healthier one, replaces the old habit.

The Fountain of Youth, a mythical spring that restores the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in it. If only it was real. As I told a friend last week, I know aging is inevitable, but I plan to fight it every step of the way! Below are strategies that can slow the aging process and make us feel good along the way.

1.Move more and preserve muscle. At least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week and two days of strength training.
2. Improve your nutrition. Minimally processed foods help prevent chronic diseases associated with aging.
3. Prioritize high-quality sleep. Aim to get at least seven hours per night. Poor sleep has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
4. Get social. Good relationships are the ultimate life hack, they keep us engaged, happier and healthier.

My Nutrution & Wellness Newsletter was emailed yesterday on the subject of Protein. At the end of the Newsletter, I include three common questions I get from clients (given below). For the full article, let me know and I will add you to the subscriber list.

Some questions I have been asked about protein:

Is protein bad for your kidneys? Depends. The concern about high protein and kidneys is that doctors tell people with poorly functioning kidneys—usually from pre-existing kidney disease—to eat a low-protein diet. But, if your kidneys are fine, no worries.
Is protein powder only for bodybuilders?

No. The misconception stems from the fact that many bodybuilders supplement their daily protein with protein shakes. They do this because to gain the mass they are looking for, they need a lot of protein, and shakes make a convenient, quick, healthy, and tasty alternative to chicken, etc.

Is protein powder a processed food?

Yes, because it is created by extracting proteins from food sources such as pasteurized milk or plants (e.g., h**p protein). However, it is a low-processed food and is better than the alternatives such as store-bought protein drinks, fruit smoothies, protein bars, high-fat fruit yogurt, etc.

Need some help with your nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, etc. contact me for a free consult.
