Have you ever noticed how scent shares similarities with song? The way bouquets of aromatic notes can fill your heart the way a full song can fill you with emotion? From the opening notes to the crescendo to lasting impressions at the end of each, the words we use to talk about music and perfume echo each other. Both follow a wave of experience, evolving through layers, moments, and harmonies. This phenomenon is more than a coincidence - it is a borrowing of nomenclature.

Music theory and perfumery have been long intertwined due to the 19 century work of English chemist and perfumer Septimus Piesse. Using music theory to establish an understanding of perfume, he designed an “odophone” - a scale of smells correlating aromas to different pitches in Western musical notation to create “chords of notes,” building the foundations of the olfactory lingua-franca we know today.

A warm hello to all those who have crossed our path in recent months, and to those who are just discovering us! It’s the perfect time to (re)introduce ourselves.

Lvnea is a natural perfumery based in Montreal, Quebec, focusing on traditional, sustainable plant essences and precious botanical extracts. Each of our fragrances tells a story steeped in natural history, folklore and magic. Fragrance becomes a talisman, a charm, a portal - opening the door to the world the wearer wishes to inhabit.

Founded in 2013 by our perfumer April Lea (elle), Lvnea marries ancient traditions with handmade rituals. From her studio and atelier-boutique in Montreal, April creates complex, gender-neutral fragrances crafted entirely on site from natural ingredients.

Today, we’re a small, ever-evolving team of women, non-binary and q***r people at Lvnea (seven in all!), all dedicated to our art and growing with the work. We value creativity, rest and a healthy work-life balance.

And as always, we support free Palestine and all peoples living under oppression. Trans rights are human rights. 🇵🇸🏳️‍⚧️

Have you ever caught a hint of a scent that instantly sparked a memory like a familiar song?

Piesse believed that fragrances had harmonies, notes and chords just like music. In fact, many of the terms we use to describe scent are borrowed from music terminology: top/middle/base notes, accords, perfumer’s organ, as well as many scent descriptors such as the weight and texture (heavy, soft), pitch (hi vs low), body, and timber.

Perfume layering is the perfect way to create a unique and signature fragrance. Here at LVNEA, we have found ourselves layering with our Summer Release perfumes to create personal stories through fragrance:

Selkie + Black Sea: a hot mineral stone, meditatively crashing against the waves of the shore, while sunlight glimmers onto the rocks and surface of the crisp blue waters.

Ghost Pine + Black Sea: Pacific Northwest coast - moody grey skies and slow steady waves, pine trees and boreal green wafting in the winds.

Selkie + Cuir Fetiche: wet, warm and smokey - returning from the water at dusk with salty and slightly sweet cast on your skin, resting next to the woodfire a loved one has made from dried driftwood, sticks and moss.
