My kind of ceramics! Why are doulas so obsessed with “anatomy”? Breasts, vulvas, vaginas, cervixes? I think it is because we see the hidden parts of our anatomy in all their glory and power, birthing and feeding small humans! (OK, maybe not cervixes…)

I was at a pre-natal the other day and the expectant parents were commenting that the online pre-natal courses from the hospital showed a lot of different people’s breasts in the breastfeeding chapter and they didn’t really understand why. We talked through it a bit, discussing how every person views their breasts as normal, and when that is not reflected in what is portrayed inn the media (in this case a breastfeeding lesson) they may worry that they don’t have the “right” type of breast for breastfeeding.

Breasts, areloas and ni***es come in so many shapes, colours and sizes and pretty much all of them work for breastfeeding!

Interested in getting a head start on breastfeeding? I offer pre-natal breastfeeding classes so that you can be prepared from day one! Link in bio.

The Montreal Doula Collective (MDC) is holding an online fundraising auction of arts, crafts and more, and we need your help!

MDC provides free doula services for expectant parents going through difficult situations, ranging from poverty, to new refugee claimants, or simply to being alone and without support during their pregnancy. The goal of MDC is to make clients’ birth experiences as joyous as possible by providing support, resources, and companionship. Your donation can make a difference!
If you are artsy or craftsy and would be interested in donating something to the auction, please be in touch! Maybe you know someone who likes knitting, photography, pottery, watercolours or another exciting art form I forgot to mention, but they aren’t reading this? Put them in touch, too! We are looking specifically for people to donate items that can arrive in Montreal by early-mid November to be photographed and put up on our auction page. We can pick up the items anywhere on the island. Macramé, photography or art prints, hand-dyed tablecloths, crocheted gnomes, jewelry…. anything goes!

Not particularly creative, but want to get involved? Please join our FB auction page (MDC Craft Bazaar - MDC bazar d'artisanat Nov 15-Dec 10 2023) and be sure to spread the word to your friends! If you are in Montreal, we could certainly use a hand photographing and sending out items after the auction. kimberly_reine@yahoo.ca

Beautiful placenta print from a powerful natural birth with midwives! I really can not go on enough about how wonderful it is to be followed by midwives if you are planning a non-medicated birth. Their patient-centred care, unhurried appointments and excellent pre-natal courses all contribute to birthing people who feel relaxed and confident throughout their pregnancy and labour. It makes me so upset when people in the birthing person’s entourage (including partners and parents) try to pressure them into birthing with doctors in a hospital because they think it is “safer”. In Québec, midwives are very regulated in what kind of patients they can take and when they need to transfer care to an Ob-Gyn to make the birthing experience as safe as possible. And birthing people are responsible adults, capable of making the necessary decisions about their own bodies and how they want to give birth.

Not sure what I thought my future career would look like, but it certainly wasn’t this! Feeding morsels of fruit to people labouring in the bathtub is actually pretty fun... there is that excitement in the air knowing that you are getting ready for a pretty intense ride ahead!

Pretty much the best take on breastfeeding in public that I have ever read.

By Jeremy Martin-Weber Women are allowed to breastfeed anywhere they are legally allowed to be. This isn’t my opinion. This is the law in all states in the US. I probably wouldn’t have known that if my wife hadn’t started a breastfeeding support community. Be that as it may, it is the law. And...

That harvest moon we had over the weekend certainly threw things for a loop! I spent more than 34 hours at back to back births.... but it was worth every minute to watch two beautiful babies be born!
