Excessive screentime is changing our eyes faster than we can blink! Staring at screens is driving up rates of myopia (nearsightedness), dry eyes, and other vision problems - especially in kids' developing eyes. The CBC shares this video about how screens can be detrimental to our eyes' health and to our vision: https://youtu.be/0W9zbBdYMDg?si=rPXNFYEz-0_zfMeL

Prolonged exposure to High Energy Visible Light (AKA blue light!) can cause headaches, eye fatigue, symptoms of dry eyes, and more! If you're like most of us these days and are spending hours of your day in front of a screen, be sure to protect your eyes by choosing lenses with a blue-light blocking coating.

Our dispensary offers HOYA lenses with Recharge blue-light protective coating, which also aids in repelling dirt, water, and glare, as well as being scratch resistant. This anti-reflection coating reduces harmful blue light by up to 30% compared to conventional anti-reflection coatings, helping to protect your eyes and provide a more relaxed viewing experience! Ask your Optometrist or one of our dispensary staff about adding this blue-light blocker to your next pair of glasses!

Shopping around for new glasses? Remember to include your local optical (us!) when getting a quote!

If you bring in a detailed quote from elsewhere, we will price match to the same frame style and lens quality - and we always include personalized frame fitting and custom measurements! You can also be assured that all our glasses undergo a thorough quality assurance verification before they leave our lab, so you know they are the correct prescription and meeting all the required specifications before you wear them!

There's lots of changes to routine when the kids go back to school, and one big change is the types of activities they have to do all day! During the summer, most kids spend hours outside playing with friends, but during the school year, their attention focuses more on indoor tasks.

Studies show that too much indoor work, especially screentime, can be harmful to your child's vision! Ensure their eyes are protected by limiting their time doing any prolonged near tasks like reading and screentime to no more than 2 hours total per day (and no more than 1 hour total for kids younger than school age!). Kids should also spend a total of 2 hours outside per day, which is shown to be protective against myopia progression - ideally, while wearing sunglasses!

Talk to your Optometrist about the best ways to keep your kids eye's healthy during the school year - book an appointment online or call 306-693-8584 today!

Our Story

Our Mission: We are dedicated to providing the people of southern Saskatchewan with the best complete eye care possible using state of the art diagnostic equipment. Our optical dispensary carries over 1000 frames to appeal to all wants and needs, and uses all the latest lens technologies. We also provide contact lenses, low vision aids and binocular vision training. We work closely with Horizon Laser Vision Centre to provide you with the best possible refractive surgery outcomes.

History of Primary Eye Care Centre:

Primary Eye Care Centre was founded by Dr. Myles McMorris and Dr. Jacqueline John in 1982. Dr. McMorris and Dr. John were both raised in the province of Saskatchewan and graduated from the University of Waterloo, Ontario in 1981 with Doctor of Optometry degrees. Dr. Shannon Gatrell joined the practice in 2008 as an associate and became a partner in the business in 2010. Dr. Shawn Lins then joined the practice in 2014 as an associate and became a partner in 2018. Dr. McMorris officially retired from the practice in June 2018. We wish him the best in his retirement. Dr. Marcia Mitschke joined the practice as an associate in August 2018.

We have always felt that in addition to serving our patients to the best of our abilities, it is important to contribute to our professional Association, our Community and our Province. We are proud members of the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists (SAO), Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), and the Eye Health Council of Canada. We are very supportive of the SAO Optometric Assistants Program.
