While completing my Master in Physiotherapy in Oxford, UK I wrote my thesis on injury prevention training to reduce the incidence of sport-related concussions amongst female adolescents. Females are at 3x higher rate of concussions compared to males, but female research in sport only accounts for 20% of all sports medicine research. I choose this topic not just to highlight injury reduction techniques, but also to support young women in sport.

Welcome to the team Robyn!

Meet our new Physical Therapist (Res.), you may recognize her from working around the clinic this past summer.

Robyn completed her Bachelor of Kinesiology (2019) at University of Regina. She then worked as an exercise therapist with an interest in chronic conditions and geriatric populations. She has 10 years of experience working side line coverage for youth and collegiate sport teams with an interest in injury prevention training. She then went to Oxford, UK to complete her Masters in Physical Therapy (2025).

Robyn will be accepting patients outside of the Moosomin area. Call the clinic or come on by to book in with her! No referral needed.

Bed rest is not the most effective treatment for most back pain, say doctors. And yet many people still do it.

We are loving the shout outs Physiotherapists are getting from Olympic athletes!

See what Mark’s physio said when he asked if he’d ever snowboard again...

🔥Imaging and Treatment🔥
Knowledge 💣s dropping by .caleb.burgess. If you haven't heard, imaging results (Xrays, MRIs, etc) have a very poor correlation with pain and function in many cases, especially in the spine. So even if your Xray shows "degeneration" in your lumbar spine, you may still have great range of motion and no pain 😎. Or you may have a lot of pain and poor range of motion😥. Yet either of these scenarios could also happen if your spine DOES NOT have any evidence of "degeneration" on the Xray 🤔. Why? Because:
1) Movement and function is dynamic (not one position), and most imaging is static, therefore you can't make a dynamic conclusion about function off of a static image
2) We now know that ALL PAIN is an OUTPUT from the BRAIN in response to the CUMULATIVE effect of ALL the perceived THREATS in our lives (which may include local tissue sensitivity or injury, poor immune function, feelings of sadness, depression, stress, negative beliefs or fears, being around people/places we don't like, etc). So evidence of "tissue damage" on imaging is not sufficient for us to have pain, although it MAY contribute.
My point is this: As a physical therapist, for most cases seeing your imaging result DOES NOT HELP ME make an accurate decision about how to work with you to help improve your FUNCTION and/or REDUCE PAIN. So don't just hand me your Xray and then expect for me to know the best treatment plan.
I'll get WAY more information from watching/assessing how well you move, how strong you are, understanding the physical demands of your work life/hobbies/sport, listening to how you perceive your problem, identifying if it is more related to stress/anxiety, depression, or a traumatic experience etc (basically identifying any THREATS in your life that may contribute to your pain experience), than looking at one piece of static film or reading a diagnosis on a piece of paper from your physician.
So please understand: evaluating and working with YOU as a WHOLE PERSON is INFINITELY MORE EFFECTIVE than trying to treat your Xray results. It just doesn't work that way!
