I’m reposting this because I often get clients that tell me they have arthritis which I find curious when I don’t see inflammation or joint disfigurement. Perhaps something else is going on. 🤔

When it comes to musculoskeletal problems, medical diagnoses are often big fat guesses, especially given that little to no physical examination is typically done before issuing a diagnosis.

I had a client once with painful toe joints. They'd been like this for decades and had been told it was arthritis. I examined the toes and it definitely didn't feel like arthritis. What I could see was that multiple metatarsal heads were dropped. This often happens when there's imbalance between the flexors and extensors. I tested the flexors and they tested very inhibited. Something was keeping them from firing normally. I went to one of my go to spots for this -- an adhesion between the toe extensors and the extensor retinacula. I freed that up and the toe flexors turned right on and fired normally. The client got up and walked around and their foot felt better for the first time in 30-40 years.

Sometimes it's difficult to find shoes that fit just right, or you have an injury/condition that temporarily affects your fit. In those cases, alternate lacing strategies can be useful. I re-laced a client's shoes for high arches the other day and it was WAY more comfortable.

Flip-Flops and Foot Pain

I’d like to share a case study from my clinic to illustrate the potential consequences of wearing flip-flops. A few years ago, I had a young client who had been suffering from foot pain (plantar fasciitis) for two long years, which greatly limited her ability to participate in dance and sports classes.

She came to me for sessions to alleviate her pain using reflexology and incorporating muscle relaxation techniques for her tight calf muscles. Thankfully, after 2 weeks of 2 weekly sessions, we were successful in reducing her pain. However, there was another crucial change she made to support her healing process: she agreed to part with her flip-flops and purchased new sandals with a back strap instead.

With the family's permission, I share these photos below, you will notice color markings indicating the areas of pain, which I draw to allow us to track changes in both the intensity and location of pain over time. However, please pay close attention to the vertical line present in the ball of her foot. This line was a direct result of her gripping her flip-flops with her foot as she walked. Conversely, as she transitioned to the new sandals, you can observe how her foot opened up, relaxed, and the line gradually disappeared.

It is important to note that if this young client had not made the decision to part ways with her flip-flops, it is highly likely that her pain would not have completely subsided or it could have returned shortly after.

Please let this example serve as a warning of how wearing flip-flops can affect our feet and our well-being!

Oran Oviv is a reflexology therapist who has been practicing for 25 years. She is an avid learner. I have seen her name on many participant lists from webinars I have taken over the last few years. Oran was in Canada recently speaking at a conference the Reflexology Association of Canada put on in Ottawa. She offers very well-researched articles. Oran’s main interest is brain health and prevention of dementia.

This post is very interesting as it defines the different types of oils we commonly ingest through foods or supplements. There is a surprising fact about how the body organizes its use of these oils. Take the time and give it a read. Then, be good to yourself and make the changes necessary to enjoy a quality mind.

What is reflexology? 👣

Reflexology is an ancient therapy that focuses on healing in the body by activating different reflex points found in the hands and feet.

Pressing on the different points in the hands and feet causes reflex responses in corresponding parts of the body, which can help promote healing.

Reflexology is an effective therapy that can help treat various issues from headaches and tension to menstrual cramps and insomnia.

Your practitioner will advise how often you should receive treatment based on your health concerns and wellness goals. Because the benefits of reflexology are more subtle and build over time, having frequent sessions is advised, especially if you are new to the practice.

You've heard the expression use it or lose it? Sometimes this is literally true. As we reach our later years, a process called fibrosis occurs where muscles degenerate and become thick with fibrotic tissue. It's not reversible but it IS preventable through movement and exercise.

Working on the heel of the foot helps these muscle tensions to relax.

Working on the heel of the foot helps these muscle tensions to relax.

The deep lateral rotators of the hip, sometimes referred to as the "deep 6" are essentially like the rotator cuff of the hip. Not only do they rotate the hip, but they collectively help maintain proper positioning of the ball in the socket. When the hip becomes compressed, these muscles are often a factor. Foam rolling can sometimes help. Here's a video of how to do that. https://bdme.ch/55mq
