Results suggest that a vegan diet reduces the number of pills [people over 60 take] by 58% compared to non-vegetarian (IRR=.42 [95% CI: .25-.70]), even after adjusting for covariates. Increases in age, body mass index (BMI), and presence of disease suggest an increased number of pills taken. A vegan diet showed the lowest amount of pills in this sample.

Ms. Angelina Evangelista - previously Hope. Because we didn’t want to confuse Hope the Turkey with Hope the Goat, we took some time getting to know her and realized she’s both wildly zany and very much a Diva - somehow that led to calling her Angelina Evangelista Turkey Baby. I guess Angelina for short?

Well, we offended her BIG time today by having the audacity to offer breakfast in a pumpkin bowl, and to present her with a whole pumpkin for inspection. Similar reaction to bananas… we know from that she loves blueberries… we should’ve stuck with that 😂 Hoping she forgives us.

Of course, this moment would not occur with Hank the Goat (his personal past makes him feel a bit defensive around anyone his height or smaller), but with many of our animal friends, Esmé has experienced the opportunity to bond and have genuine connections and mutual affection (safety first, always, of course! Like humans, even kindness does not negate unpredictable reactions or movements).

Hoping she remembers these friends fondly and continues to confidently advocate. Going to school in a rural community has led to many a discussion about lunches and friends. It’s also involved “meat” drives (?), chick hatching programs, and other such experiences. We have used them as learning opportunities on both ends - how to express her thoughts and how to ask “but why?” and opportunities to educate without isolating herself. We don’t live in a vegan world (here’s hoping!), so her ability to broach these subjects with compassion in her voice has been really important.
Equally important has been giving her opportunities to engage with other vegan kids when we can as for awhile there she may have thought she was the only one!

To comprehend the scale, it is better to bring it down to the average minute: 140,000 chickens are slaughtered every minute.

Quantifying these numbers helps us all to visualize just how big a problem factory farming is. These numbers, still growing, are not sustainable.

Welcome home 🤍 You’ve been in very loving hands at - where you officially have both a fan club and friends for life 🤍🤍🤍

I’m so sorry for things that were done to you before you were found in a field by two good souls who then got the good souls at Guelph Humane Society involved.
It’s thought you perhaps fell from a truck or escaped in some other way - that spark in your eye is testament to the things you are surely capable of!
I hope from that moment on you knew you were destined for something so special and so opposite of what the turkey industry had in mind … you are a gift, like all turkeys are, and I know (just like Josephine and Elliot), you are going to change sooo many hearts and minds being just the best turkey advocate ever!!! We’ve always loved you, but it’s nice to finally meet you!

Maybe it’s her boots - maybe it’s just Sharon. Everyone around here can’t get enough of her - including two snouts we haven’t had even a moment to introduce - Miffle & Tippy (and Pickles, but he was busy during this little cuddle sesh). With Delilah, Miffle, Tippy, Pickles, and Hope (new name possibly so as not to confuse with Hope the Goat 🤍), we have a lot of photo taking and post-making to catch up with!

Thank you to everyone who continues to support us in offering both home and solace to animals in need. We have had to say “I’m sorry, we can’t” for what seemed like forever, but we found ourselves ready to say “yes!!!” this year after great planning, new fencing, and support!

We are likely not able to take on anyone else for the time being though as providing the best possible care for all of our animal friends is our priority and this includes space, nutrition, vet care, and an emergency fund.
