❄️Storm Update - Closure of City Facilities and Request to Limit Travel
The City of St. John's continues to address road conditions following significant snowfall over the past five days and ongoing poor weather. City crews need the time and space to carry out cleanup efforts safely and efficiently. The City has been working closely with neighbouring municipalities, the Provincial Government, Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic to coordinate operational decisions that help reduce traffic volumes across the region and support snow clearing efforts.
To support cleanup efforts and keep everyone safe, please note the following:
🏛️ Facility Closures - Feb 23: All facilities, including City Hall and recreation facilities, will be closed for the day on Monday, February 23. Employees will work from home where possible.
⛔ Limit Travel: Residents are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. If travel cannot be avoided, drivers are asked to use extreme caution and allow extra time to reach their destination.
🚗 Weather-Related Parking Ban: The weather-related parking ban remains in effect. All on-street parking is banned on any streets outside the downtown area until further notice. Vehicles parked on the street may be ticketed or towed.
🗑️ Waste Collection Cancellation - Feb 23: Curbside waste collection is cancelled on Monday, February 23, 2026. A further update will be provided on the updated collection schedule.
At this time, the City is not declaring a State of Emergency. While road conditions remain challenging, we feel the above measures will provide the conditions needed to support efficient snow clearing operations. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will take additional measures if necessary.
Updates will be provided as information becomes available. The City appreciates residents’ cooperation and patience during this time.
