🪽 Stranded Leach’s Storm-Petrels in Conception Bay South
The Town has received reports of stranded Leach’s Storm-Petrels, small, black seabirds with white rumps, along our shores.
Why does this happen?
From mid-September to mid-November, young storm-petrels leave their burrows on Baccalieu Island and head out to sea for the first time. Many are drawn off course by artificial lighting on land and vessels. Once grounded, they sadly cannot take flight again and become stranded.
📉 Over the past 30 years, the global population of storm-petrels has dropped by about 50%. Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 90% of the world’s population.
💡 How you can help:
Reduce outdoor lighting during this season to prevent strandings.
🐦 If you spot a stranded storm-petrel call or text 709-330-8929 or message CPAWS-NL for pick up.
Together, we can help protect this vulnerable seabird.
