✈️🌞 Summer Travel Tips for People with Hearing Loss 🌞✈️

Planning a getaway this summer? Travel should be fun, not stressful—even with hearing loss! Here are a few easy tips to help make your trip smoother and more accessible:

✅ Plan Ahead – Let airlines, hotels, and tour companies know about your hearing needs in advance. Many offer helpful accommodations.

✅ Use Visual Alerts – Pack portable alerting devices (like vibrating alarm clocks) or use phone apps for wake-up calls and reminders.

✅ Pack Extra Supplies – Bring spare batteries, chargers, or accessories for your hearing aids or cochlear implants.

✅ Download Helpful Apps – Consider speech-to-text or captioning apps that can help in busy, noisy places.

✅ Request Written Information – Don’t hesitate to ask for itineraries, schedules, or emergency instructions in writing.

✅ Choose Seating Strategically – Sit where you can best see and hear (near speakers, guides, or travel companions).

✅ Keep Devices Safe – Store hearing aids or processors safely during flights and keep them with you in carry-on luggage.

✅ Take Care in New Environments – Watch for unfamiliar alarms, signals, or public announcements that might be easy to miss.

Travelling with hearing loss doesn’t have to mean missing out. A little preparation can go a long way toward a more relaxing, enjoyable summer adventure! 🌴🧳✈️

Did you know?🤔

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown was born with partial hearing loss in one ear, and she eventually lost all hearing in that ear. Despite this, she continues to shine as an actor, producer, and advocate. Millie reminds us that hearing loss doesn’t limit your ability to dream big and achieve even bigger.

At CHHA-NL, we celebrate stories like Millie’s that empower and uplift the hard-of-hearing community across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Did you know? 🤔

Before he became the host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert lost all hearing in his right ear as a child due to a medical procedure.

In his specific case, he could no longer pursue the career of a marine biologist because he could not get his ears wet; however, this opened the door to a new passion: comedy and performance. Colbert has shared how this experience shaped his path and helped him develop a unique perspective on life. His creativity, quick wit, and thoughtful storytelling have made him one of the most recognizable voices in late-night television. Colbert's experience reminds us that hearing differences are part of the rich diversity that makes each person’s journey unique.

Additionally, his story should act as a gentle reminder that hearing loss can change your direction sometimes, but it doesn’t have to limit your potential.

At CHHA-NL, we celebrate stories like Stephen Colbert’s that demonstrate resilience and creativity!
