In 1985, Nova Scotia saw its first organized Black History Month celebration with the official opening night at the North Branch Library in North End Halifax, a historic Black Nova Scotian community. In 1988, the province of Nova Scotia observed its first Black History Month, paving the way for the annual recognition of African Heritage Month beginning in 1996.

On a national level, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in 1995. The federal government cemented this in 2008, when Senator Donald Oliver, the first Black man appointed to the Senate, introduced the Motion to Recognize Contributions of Black Canadians and February as Black History Month. It passed unanimously.

Despite their different names, African Heritage Month and Black History Month share the same principle: the celebration and recognition of the African diaspora in the province and country.
