1,000,000th tree planted in the community forest! 🌲

This year, we planted 54,000 seedlings in last year's harvested areas on the community forest. Among those 54,000 trees was the 1 millionth tree planted on the community forest since it was established!

NACFOR also has 2 new "Free Growing" blocks in our CFA, and 2 new "Free Growing" blocks in our Woodlot, number 406.

📌 "Free Growing" is the terminology for a block or stand that has achieved or met the legal requirements of a specific stocking standard in that unit. If the stand has met the height criteria, is healthy, and is not impeded by competition from shrubs and other trees, it is deemed free growing. A field survey is done every few years on certain blocks to determine if the trees are growing well and if they have met free growing criteria.

The Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) harvesting plans for Summit Lake tenure area have been designed to follow western toad best management practices to reduce impacts, maintain terrestrial habitat, and hibernacula.

Harvesting will be completed during the winter months, with frozen ground and a snowpack to reduce impacts, and outside of the western toad migration and breeding season. The planned blocks will be partial cuts with varying levels of tree retention zones, riparian area buffers, and wildlife tree retention. No clearcuts are being proposed.

Western toad best management practices were developed in 2015 for harvesting in the Summit Lake area. These practices were informed by field studies conducted at Summit Lake from 2014 – 2017. NACFOR is committed to responsibly and sustainably managing the community forest tenure for the economic, social, and environmental benefit of the Nakusp and area community. Wildfire risk reduction work is ongoing in the Wensley Creek area. Crews are working on Phase 2 of Unit 5, using hand treatment and mechanical treatment techniques.

Wildfire risk reduction work is done to increase public safety and reduce the risk of a catastrophic fire, especially near communities.
This WRR work in Unit 5 was funded by the Forest Enhancement Society of BC.

NACFOR has led WRR treatment in many different areas around Nakusp. Since 2020, about 160 hectares in the wildland urban interface and within the Village of Nakusp have been treated.

Great job to the Arrow Lakes District Arts Council Society for another successful season of Music in the Park!

This community event is a fantastic showcase of community volunteerism, community spirit, art, celebration, and local talent. ALDACS brings in local bands for eight entertaining nights of music at the municipal park in Nakusp during July and August.

NACFOR is proud to be a main supporter of this initiative. Thank you to all of the volunteers who put it together!
