A little magic at today’s Nanaimo Family Life Association workshop. 🌲 thanks for having me .bc

A participant mentioned how, when people first arrived, they were quiet and a bit withdrawn… and by the end there was laughter, pride, and so much sharing around the room. The whole space shifted.

One of my favourite moments: everyone choosing their thrifted container. Each pick said something small but true about them- whether it was bold, practical, sentimental, playful. Such a simple thing, but it opened people up. 🌱

A favourite fall/ winter program- simmer pots! 🍊🌲 The scents of citrus, cinnamon, and grand fir fill the room and bring really sweet conversation. A gentle reminder though, this is a scented program, so I always check with the team, site, and residents first to check in about scent policies. And when gathering greens, be sure to choose conifers that are safe to handle and ideally windfall or from your own property!

Richard Louv appreciation post! 🌿

After hearing Richard Louv as the keynote speaker at the AHTA conference today, I’m struck by the echo of this message through his presentation, the audience, and my own philosophies.

His work on nature deficit disorder and the urgent need to reconnect children (and all of us) with the natural world isn’t just theory, it’s a call to action that resonates deeply with why we do this work.

These quotes remind me that horticultural therapy isn’t a luxury or a nice-to-have. It’s about reclaiming something fundamental to our humanity. When we create spaces for people to dig in the dirt, feel the sun, and watch things grow, we’re not just facilitating healing, we’re honoring a basic human right.

Traveling with a horticulture & garden lover means if there is a garden— one must stop. Latest highlight: Little Island, Manhattan, featuring a riveting live audio guide by lead landscaper Signe Mountain (a.k.a. my very enthusiastic travel companion).
