Have you ever had an emotional reaction that felt *completely real*…
only to realize later your brain may have been sounding an alarm that didn’t fully match the situation?

Big feelings can be incredibly convincing.

Fear can say:
“This isn’t safe.”

Shame can say:
“There’s something wrong with me.”

Anxiety can say:
“You need to fix this. Right now.”

And when those emotions are loud enough, they can start to feel like facts.

But emotional intelligence isn’t about ignoring feelings or pretending they don’t matter.

It’s learning how to pause long enough to ask:
“Is this true… or does it just feel true right now?”

You can validate the feeling
without automatically believing the story it’s telling.

This week’s Window Watchers comic follows Bingley spiralling over a squirrel outside the window. Darcy reminds him that a big feeling does not always mean a big threat.

Honestly… most of us have had a squirrel moment.

Sometimes our reactions feel bigger than the situation.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong.

Big feelings—like panic, fear, or shame—are very real in the body.
But they aren’t always accurate reflections of what’s happening right now.

They often come from older protective systems doing their job a little too well.

Emotional intelligence isn’t about ignoring those feelings.
It’s about being able to feel them fully without automatically believing the story they’re telling.

You can validate the experience…
without assuming the threat is real.

This is something kids are learning.
And honestly, most adults are too.

If this one resonates, you’re not alone.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t therapy.
It’s reaching out.

You don’t need the “right” words.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You just need a place where you can show up honestly.

At Island Clinical Counselling, we work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families across Vancouver Island and virtually across BC.

Every person. Every story. Welcome here.

“Maybe I’m just tired.”
“Maybe I just need a weekend.”

Sometimes burnout is harder to recognize because it builds slowly.

This week’s Window Watchers comic touches on something a lot of people experience quietly: the pressure to keep functioning long after your mind and body are asking for care.

Burnout is not a personal failure.
It’s often a sign that your nervous system has been carrying too much for too long.

What’s one small thing your body or mind might be asking for right now?
