Is your baby turning their head more to one side than the other? ⁣🤔

Sometimes babies demonstrate a preference for turning their head to one side more than the other. When muscles in the neck are really tight, baby may not be able to look towards the other direction at all. If this is happening, your baby might have torticollis. ⁣

Torticollis is a common muscular condition caused by tightening of the muscles on the side of the neck, often resulting from baby’s position in the womb.⁣

When identified early, torticollis can easily be treated and resolved. ⁣

If you are concerned about your baby’s head position or neck mobility, it’s a good idea to reach out for support.⁣

A pediatric osteopathic practitioner can help to identify restrictions in muscles and joints, measure range of motion, and assess the rest of baby’s body to identify patterns of tension and restricted mobility. 🤲🏼💕 We use gentle hands-on techniques to improve mobility and reduce tension comfortably for baby and will provide you with strategies you can do to further help your baby.

Did you know that Osteopathy can alleviate symptoms associated with infant colic, such as crying, regurgitation and interrupted sleep? ⁣

Colic is defined as “when a healthy baby cries for a very long time for no obvious reason” 😳⁣

Let me tell you- while everything may check out as ‘healthy and fine’ medically, a baby who is crying inconsolably is most definitely trying to communicate something. ⁣

Characteristics of infant colic include inconsolable crying for more than 3 hours, more than 3 days per week, for longer than 3 weeks and affects about 10-40% of infants and peaks around 6 weeks of age. ⁣

📚A randomized controlled study published in 2023 found that treatment with osteopathic manual therapy alleviated the symptoms of infant colic and showed reductions in colic severity, compared to the control group. ⁣

👶🏼The group of infants who received osteopathic treatment cried less and the improvement was maintained during the second week, with parents reporting improvements after each treatment. They also had improvements in sleep and regurgitation with no adverse side effects 🙌🏼 ⁣

💥Neck Pain, whether an acute flare-up or a chronic occurrence, is a common problem that can really impact quality of life and is often distressing to some degree. ⁣

Sometimes the cause is fairly obvious, as in when there has been an injury (whiplash, falls, sports injuries), yet it is also common for neck pain to occur without a mechanism of injury with seemingly random onset. ⁣

Stress, head position or posture (as in prolonged computer work), and general body tension can contribute to neck discomfort and pain. ⁣

The pain may be localized to the neck, or may radiate into the head, down the arms, and into the upper back or shoulders. ⁣

Osteopathic Practitioners aim to understand whether neck pain is originating from muscle tension or strain, irritation to nerves, breathing patterns, or is due to conditions of the bones and discs of the cervical spine. ⁣

We use a range of techniques that can focus on the cranium, spine, muscles, throat, jaw, and shoulders, while applying a global approach and understanding the importance of looking at the whole body rather than only treating the symptomatic area (there are so many interconnections within the body!). ⁣

Techniques used may include:⁣
- cranial osteopathic techniques⁣
- soft tissue techniques⁣
- joint mobilization’s (which are always gentle and working with the body, no forceful manoeuvres are ever used on the neck)⁣

We may talk about movements, exercises, and strategies to ease your symptoms in conjunction to osteopathic treatment. ⁣

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! ⁣

🍼 Bottle feeding your breastfed baby? ⁣

Here are a few tips that may help prevent a preference for the rapid flow of a bottle, which may interfere with breastfeeding 🤱🏼 ⁣

1. Before introducing a bottle, make sure that breastfeeding has been well established and that baby is latching well. Your milk supply is being established during the first 4-6 weeks and it’s important to allow your baby to cluster feed and develop their breastfeeding skills during this time. ⁣

2. When bottle feeding, used a paced approach by allowing baby to latch onto the bottle (don’t shove the bottle into their mouth) and take breaks, just like when baby is breastfeeding. This will take longer but also allows baby to pace themselves and can prevent over feeding and help with digestion. ⁣

3. Use a slower flow bottle ni**le so that baby can continue to use latch well and use their feeding reflexes. ⁣

4. Maintain your milk supply by pumping the amount of milk your baby needs. Not removing milk from your breasts at regular intervals might lower your supply, and over pumping can lead to over production of milk. ⁣

Have you ever heard of craniosacral therapy?⁣

Sometimes people ask me if I do craniosacral work and the answer is yes! I actually use it quite a bit in my practice as part of a more global osteopathic treatment plan and at times for more localized treatment for a variety of symptoms that relate to the nerves, muscle attachments, and bones of the skull. ⁣

💆🏽‍♀️Craniosacral therapy involves gentle, light touch head-holding techniques that can address tension and strain sensations in the cranium, including the facial bones, sinuses, and jaw. ⁣

This type of technique is particularly relaxing and can help with a variety of concerns including TMJ dysfunction, headaches, sinus congestion, and post-concussion symptoms. ⁣

CST can be helpful for people of all ages, including babies who may have experienced birth traumas or are experiencing trouble sucking/feeding or torticolis and plagiocephaly. ⁣

In fact, craniosacral therapy was developed by an osteopath named William Garner Sutherland. ⁣

Have you tried CST? ⁣

Tips to Breastfeed your Sleepy Baby⁣

😴 Some babies spend so much time sleeping during the first few weeks after birth that it can be difficult to nurse at least 8 times each day.⁣

👇🏼Here are a few tips that might help:⁣

• Make sure baby isn’t too warm by dressing them in light clothing or un******ng down to their diaper to feed. ⁣

• Hold baby so their tummy is down on the parent’s semi reclined body, ideally skin-to-skin to trigger baby’s inborn feeding reflexes. ⁣

• Consider avoiding swaddling as this can lead to longer sleeps, inhibit feeding reflexes and lead to missed feeding cues. ⁣

• Cluster or bunch feeds together during baby’s naturally occurring wake and alert times (yes, even if it’s during the middle of the night!)⁣

• Guide baby to latch and add manual breast compressions if baby falls asleep early during their feed to rouse them and trigger their sucking reflex or give them a little tickle. ⁣

👶🏼It is normal for newborns to move in and out of sleep often and babies can nurse effectively while in a light sleep.⁣

If you are concerned that your baby may not be feeding often enough or have concerns around their weight, please check in with your healthcare provider. ⁣

This is not meant to be medical advice, please consult with your doctor or midwife regarding any concerns about your baby.

“𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺.” 😞⁣

This is something I have been hearing a lot lately, and if this is true for you too, you are not alone. In fact, I said those very same words while struggling to nurse my first born. ⁣

Although breastfeeding is natural and the biological norm for all mammals, it is also a learned skill (for both baby and parent), and for some, it does not always come as easily as it may look. ⁣

🤱🏼 As many as 90% of parents experience challenges during the early days of breastfeeding. ⁣

Concerns over milk supply, wondering if baby is getting enough, breast and ni**le pain and latch concerns, engorgement and mastitis, in addition to cultural norms and lack of support are common challenges expressed by upwards of 60% of mothers who do not breastfeed for as long as they intend to. ⁣

Far too many mothers/parents are struggling to troubleshoot breastfeeding issues without adequate support. ⁣

🤱🏻The good news is that there are solutions to most breastfeeding problems, even when cases appear to be complicated. ⁣

Since having expanded my practice to offer lactation support in addition to osteopathy, I have worked with many wonderful families and dyads and have had the honour of witnessing many improvements in latching and easing of bothersome symptoms.⁣

If you are struggling to breastfeed or are expecting and would like information on breastfeeding to feel better prepared to navigate the early days of colostrum, milk expression and breastfeeding, please reach out. ⁣

In person and virtual support is available. ⁣

04/26/2024

A common concern from breastfeeding parents is not being able to tell how much milk their baby is getting at the breast 🤱🏼. ⁣

🍼 Unlike with the bottle, which allows us to easily measure a baby’s intake, it is not possible to know how many ounces of milk a baby has drank from the breast, unless we weigh the baby before and after their feed (which isn’t practical and most parents don’t have or need an infant scale at home). ⁣

Worries around adequate milk intake can understandably be nerve-wracking for some parents who want to ensure their baby’s nutritional needs are being met. ⁣

🔎 There are, however, cues to look out for that are helpful ways to know that baby is getting enough, in addition to having baby’s weight tracked through your doctor, midwife, or public health nurse. ⁣

🤱🏽 How to tell if your baby is getting enough milk from the breast: ⁣

- Observe your baby’s jaw movements and listen closely for swallows (they may be quieter than you think)⁣

- Baby relaxes at the breast and appears satisfied and even ‘milk drunk’ at the end of the feed ⁣

- Number of wet & dirty diapers ⁣

- Baby’s weight gains are on track and following their growth curve ⁣

🚫 There are also poor indicators of milk intake and the following should not be used to monitor adequate milk intake: ⁣

- How full or soft your breasts are before and after feeding (though this can indicate that milk is coming out, not everyone feels changes in their breasts before and after feeding)⁣

- How long or how often baby spends at the breast ⁣

- How long baby sleeps for or how often they wake ⁣

- How much milk can be expressed or pumped following a feed ⁣

👶🏼 As the breastfed baby thrives and grows, parents learn to trust their baby will take what they need and become more sensitive to their hunger and fullness cues. ⁣

As part of your additional support, a doctor, midwife, or lactation consultant can weigh your baby before and after a feed to ascertain how much your baby is getting during a typical feed, and can provide guidance and feeding recommendations. ⁣

If you’re in need of breastfeeding support, don’t put off reaching out, help is available 🩷⁣

⭐️ Its been a great week so I thought I’d share a few highlights:⁣

🤱🏼I got to spend a morning learning from a breastfeeding medicine doctor at their clinic and got to assist in and observe a frenotomy (tongue-tie revision). ⁣

I provided breastfeeding support to a mom and her 13-day old baby and they were able to have their first successful breastfeed during their appointment 🤱🏽🥰⁣

Helped a newborn 👶🏼 with torticolis who wasn’t able to breastfeed well on one side achieve a good latch and improved head rotation following treatment. ⁣

Saw improvements in returning patients who have been receiving osteopathic treatment for TMJ dysfunction, urinary dribbling & pelvic pain, frozen shoulder, and met a few new patients too. ⁣

And to top it all off, a surprise visit from .physiotherapy and her cutie patootie baby boy! (Alex, I always love it when you pop by to see us!) 💕⁣

Hope you all have a great weekend!

About My Practice

I take a holistic approach to treating a person by taking into consideration not only the physical symptoms and pain triggers, but also by understanding the importance of mindset, the role of emotions, as well as social situations and other lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the problem, and may also be important components of the solution.
