I listened to this podcast last night about kids and screens, and ideas about screen time over the summer, and in different seasons of life, it is such a great episode!
My key take aways from it:
- You can never get away from judgement when it comes to screen time, you'll be judged by others, you judge yourself, whether they have screens or don't have screens, making a decision to avoid judgement is impossible so let that go and we don't need to be sharing our judgements to others, we don't know everything going on behind the closed doors, be kind, be curious.
- Seasons of life are going to have different screen uses, pregnant with a toddler, and super sick with no energy, maybe there is more Daniel Tiger in order to survive, some seasons we're busy and healthy and active and there's less screen time, adjust with the season you are in.
- teaching/learning screen time is different than passive, engagement, 2 hour move is different than 2 hours of YouTube shorts.
- Create clear, straightforward rules so you don't have to manage it which leads to power struggles.
I highly recommend giving it a listen especially if you're in a place of harshly judging yourself about screen time or trying to figure out how to balance it over the summer.
