Naalthwiik

Naalthwiik is a traditional Coast Salish Weaver from Snuneymuxw Territory. The name Naalthwiik was given to her by her Aunt and means taking care of her family history, who they are as well as preserving her mothers’ legends. Her roots stem from the Nuuchalthnulth and Musqueam Territory where her name comes from and the revival of weaving began.

naalthwiik was born in Snuneymuxw and learned to weave when her sister came to live here. She has continued her learning and the tradition of Coast Salish Weaving for over 30 years. naalthwiik believed strongly that the traditional weaving be brought back to Coast Salish Territory. She started with speakers’ blankets that would be used in the Big House or at Potlaches instead of ready made speakers blankets bought in stores.

Her first commissioned piece was for Late Chief Viola Wyse, a woman whom she greatly admired. The piece was a large shawl that she would proudly where to large gathering and events. Another piece of her work that she fondly remembers is a standing mat for the Brushing Ceremony for the Dali Lama at UBC in 2004.

In 2012 Naalthwiik suffered a stroke which left her unable to do the things she loved most, weaving. As she made her recovery her desired to get back to something that brought her great joy and strengthen her spirit was strong. Naalthwiik had an idea that recovery would happen not only in a physiotherapy setting but back home behind her beloved loom.
