High River Hospital Becomes First Donor Milk Dispensary in Alberta

Calgary, AB – NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank is pleased to announce that High River Hospital, a Baby Friendly designated facility, is now the first hospital in Alberta to act as a dispensary for safe, pasteurized donor human milk. This important milestone builds on the success of NorthernStar’s pilot project at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where families have benefited from accessible donor milk during critical times.

The availability of donor milk at High River Hospital provides a critical option for families when breastfeeding is not possible or when a mother’s own milk is delayed. Donor milk offers essential support in situations including:

- Bridging the gap while waiting for a mother’s milk supply to establish.
- Supporting mothers with delayed milk production, particularly those with diabetes.
- Providing a safe alternative when mothers are unwell or unable to breastfeed.

"The addition of a donor milk dispensary at High River Hospital aligns perfectly with our mission to provide every baby with the best possible start," said Jannette, Executive Director of NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank. "We are proud to partner with High River Hospital to ensure families have access to safe and pasteurized donor milk when they need it most."

Families can now purchase donor milk directly at High River Hospital, offering a convenient and reliable source of nutrition for their babies. The initiative also supports maternal mental health by reducing anxiety for parents during the early postpartum period.

The pilot project at Foothills Hospital has shown promising results, demonstrating the positive impact of donor milk availability on infant health and family well-being. NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank looks forward to sharing these results once the study is published.

NorthernStar is grateful for the ongoing support of its milk donors, community partners, and all those who contribute to the success of its mission. With the continued collaboration of hospitals like High River, NorthernStar is expanding its reach to ensure more families have the choice of donor milk when they need it most.

✨2024
This was the first year that I decided to take a step back from my nursing role in hospital and take on more doula and education clients. It has been a learning curve juggling life, kids, on-call, and having to say no sometimes. And it’s been wonderful!!

✨SAMPSON’s BIRTH STORY Here we are, the night before his second birthday, and it’s finally time to write his birth story. Classic second child—it took me an extra year to sit down and put my memories into words. I don’t remember his exact due date, his birth gestation, or the size of his head (mostly because it was surprisingly smaller than Tell’s). And I can’t recall as many of the little details from his first two years as I do with his older brother. Life’s just been fuller, and he’s kept me busy in new ways.

So, my beautiful boy, I may not remember all the little tidbits, but I will be able to tell you how your entrance into this world—and your first two years—have shown us your strong, independent spirit. In the weeks leading up to his birth, I had on-and-off contractions, probably because I was still nursing Tell regularly. The morning Sampson arrived, I was on my way to Calgary, chatting with my cousin. I mentioned, “I feel like if I wanted to have this baby, I could,” which she told me was a pretty strange thing to say. That day, I visited my grandma in the hospital, met up with my amazing doula Kerri to get a TENS machine, and then stopped by my chiropractor, Karen Quinn, who did a release on my belly. The baby turned from one side to the other right then and there, which we both noticed. Naturally, I stopped at Costco on the way home, and that’s when my contractions started to feel different—more intense. I finished shopping without buying anything extra (a good sign things were moving along), then let my midwife, Shianna, and Kerri know that labor seemed to be kicking in….

Been there !!

“I know it makes sense for him to sleep so that he will have the energy to tidy up the house and cook me dinner tomorrow, but still I am angry that he is sleeping. I want to wake him up because being awake for hours in the middle of the night, feeding a newborn, can be so lonely.
Breasfeeding is the most amazing thing I have ever done but at the sime time it is, at least for the first few weeks, one of the hardest things that I have done. I kept thinking that women should really get more appreciation for all this hard work. “
