Why did you choose to become a Registered Massage Therapist?
Kaitlyn: Since high school, I was always interested in health sciences and helping others. When I was 20, I was working as an Intern Funeral Director in Kirkland Lake, Ontario realizing for some time it was not the profession I saw myself doing long term. I became friends with a man who introduced me to his mother and sister who both had recently become Registered Massage Therapists. I was unfamiliar with Massage Therapy and had never had a massage therapy treatment nor was I aware that it was a regulated health profession. His mother, Maureen Creswell and sister, Lacey Creswell could see I was unhappy with my current field. Maureen gave me my first massage therapy treatment and talked about the schooling involved and why she felt it would be a great career path for me. A few months later, another Registered Massage Therapist and herself exchanged treatments allowing me to shadow both of their massage therapy treatments which sparked my true interest in the profession. I moved home, completed my exams for Funeral Service Education and became a Licensed Funeral director in September 2007, but had made the decision to change my career path. I enrolled with Trillium College in September 2008. I knew Registered Massage Therapy was my calling so to speak after beginning the program and am forever grateful for Maureen giving me the opportunity that I otherwise would not have had as well as seeing something in myself that I was too young to see.
What do you like best about your job?
Kaitlyn: I love the impact that we have on our patients. We are a unique healthcare profession in that we generally spend a minimum of 30 minutes with each of our patients, allowing us the opportunity to understand what each patient is experiencing physically, mentally and emotionally. I love helping other in anyway I can and I love working as a team with other healthcare professionals to get our mutual patients functioning optimally again. I love the flexibility the profession allows and having a positive impact on my patients’ lives. I love mostly everything about being a Registered Massage Therapist.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Kaitlyn: I enjoy spending time with my family. Between my 2 ½ year old and three step children, my husband and I have a pretty chaotic, but super fun home life. We enjoy the outdoors, fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, etc. For myself, I am currently doing a certified aromatherapy course. I love learning, reading and interacting with others.
What advice would you give new Registered Massage Therapists?
Kaitlyn: To find the balance that works for you and knowing your boundaries when it comes to scheduling. I was not prepared for how mentally and physically draining massage therapy can be in the beginning. I think it is extremely important to finding the work-home life balance and knowing where your daily limit is with hands-on treatment. I would also say networking with other Registered Massage Therapists and healthcare professionals is also of high importance. It is beneficial to have an understanding of each profession and what they generally do. It is super helpful to go and experience treatments such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, osteopathy, etc. so that you are able to describe to your patients what they can expect, but also so that you know what avenue you may want to direct/refer your patient to when massage therapy treatments are not achieving the results you either anticipated or hoped for. Continuing education and joining the RMTAO, in my opinion, are a couple of the best investments (other than self-care) that you can do for yourself.
Why did you choose to become a member of the RMTAO?
Kaitlyn: Initially, I became a member to save some costs on our liability insurance, but in 2015 I began taking Aaron Rutter’s continuing education courses (based in assessment) and decided to set the goal of obtaining the Certificate of Excellence in Assessment. Through my membership, I was able to save money the courses and obtained my Certificate of Excellence in Assessment in 2017. Since becoming an active member of the RMTAO, I have come to understand and appreciate all that they do for our profession. They work endlessly on our behalf and are a strong association. It is money well spent with many opportunities and incentives.
