Palpation… ✨

In craniosacral therapy, palpation is arguably one of the most essential elements of practice!

It involves a subtle melding between the part of the practitioners body that is palpating and the corresponding part of the client’s body. As this connection develops, the practitioner’s tissues begin to mirror the movements of the client’s body, creating a sense of synchronization.

Once this state of melding and synchronization is established, the practitioner’s proprioceptive awareness can begin to differentiate between the client’s movements and their own, allowing for a clearer and more refined perception of their clients tissues.

As this skill develops, varying degrees of health in the body system can be assessed through gentle attuned touch!! Like how your digestive system is functioning, how your lungs move, if there are binds in your fascia, if one hip is tighter than the other, the tone of your nervous system…

So, when my hands are on your body and it feels like I am either doing nothing OR often times clients say they feel that I am doing gentle movements, I am a usually just melding with your body and following the gentle rhythmic movements that already exist in your tissues 🙂

This can progress to more mechanical intentional technique’s (where I meld and intend a movement gently to see if your body will expand its range of motion) but the basis of all that I am doing is this. More on intentional techniques sooooon.. 🌞

The Craniosacral System 🌱

Ive been reading Upledger’s textbook in the mornings, and its been inspiring me to share about cranio. So I think this might become a thing, morning craniosacral education posts – it feels good to have a space to share & get nerdy! 🤓

Ok so, the craniosacral system is a semi-closed hydraulic system within the body.

“Closed” refers to the dural membrane – a continuous fascial sheath (the dura mater) that encircles the brain and spinal cord (cranium to sacrum), which contains cerebrospinal fluid.

“Semi-closed” reflects the way fluid is regulated through structures like the choroid plexus and arachnoid villi, which help maintain homeostasis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced by the choroid plexuses, where blood is filtered into this clear, nourishing fluid that fills the craniosacral system.
It is then reabsorbed into the venous system through the arachnoid villi, primarily along the sagittal sinus (a large vein that drains blood and fluid from the brain - and sends it back towards to heart).

This system follows the laws of fluid dynamics.
And because fluid resists shear within its enclosed boundaries, any force applied to the system is distributed throughout it. So for example when we gently work with one area of the dura, via a cranial bone, that influence can be transmitted throughout the entire system… all the way down to the sacrum.

This is why craniosacral work can feel subtle, yet have profound systemic effects…

Ps: These photos show the dura mater and the way it contains the cerebrospinal fluid in the craniosacral system.. (these were taken from google, not mine) 😏

Craniosacral Rhythm…✨

I’ve been wanting to share more about craniosacral and educate my clients because I find, in my own experience of receiving bodywork, it really helps to understand the underlying processes that are happening and the structures that are being affected. I find I can drop in a lot deeper when my conscious awareness can connect to what my therapist is sensing; it becomes a collaboration of sensing together.

So, I wanted to talk about the craniosacral rhythm, a rhythm that I palpate at times during craniosacral work.

Your body has a subtle rhythm that’s always moving, about 6–12 cycles per minute.

It is said to be the filling and draining of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain and spinal cord.

In craniosacral work, it is felt in two phases:

1. Flexion (cranium expands, sacrum tilts posteriorly, arms and legs internally rotate)
2. Extension (cranium contracts, sacrum tilts anteriorly, arms and legs externally rotate).

There’s more nuance to this in the smaller bones, but generally this process of flexion/internal rotation and extension/external rotation is how the rhythm permeates the entire body system.

How does it permeate beyond just the brain and spinal cord, you might ask? Well, the answer is through the fascia. Fascia is a continuous connective tissue web that surrounds and weaves through everything in the body—organs, muscles, nerves. CSF fills the brain and spinal cord, and the fascial membranes around feel this filling and draining. Since they are part of a continuous web that connects the entire body, the rhythm can be felt throughout the whole system.

In a session, I’m listening to the quality of that rhythm; how strong it is, how symmetrical it is, where it feels fluid, and where there might be restriction. Certain areas can feel less mobile or less “alive” in that rhythm. Rather than forcing change, the work is about supporting the body in restoring its own mobility and coherence; to gently guide the nervous system to recognize these places.

Stay tuned for more info about craniosacral work and the processes behind it soon! ✨

Most of you received this over email, but in the chance that you didn’t; UPDATE!!! :)

Im moving away from traditional Swedish oil massage towards working in a way that is in more alignment for me and my hands.

Since I am hypermobile, the amount of pressure required for deep massage is becoming difficult for my hands to sustain long-term. At the same time, it feels like a nudge from the universe to step more fully into working in ways that I feel most passionate about.

For a long time, I have been wanting to step out of the box of traditional massage, so that I can work in a more intuitive, precise, and deeply attuned way. It finally feels like time; after multiple craniosacral trainings and my mentorship with Cheyne Cameron RMT, I am ready to step into it.

So here we go! Check out my Jane-app bio for more info on these sessions, and I will post more soon to explain this new way of working in detail 🌞

PS.. I know this is sad for some of you who need and love the deeper relaxation massages, and I apologize. Please reach out and I can support you to find a new RMT that can work in that way with you! Annnnnd if you want, come try one of my new sessions and see if you like it 🙃

So I said to stay tuned for more updates… and I’ve got one! Ill be heading to Lake Atitlan Guatemala for the month of February 🌞💓

I’ve been wanting to do a solo trip for so long, and I’d actually hoped to be gone all winter but with my concussion I’ve had to shorten my trip to focus on my health (ohh life and its curve balls).

Ill be staying at a beautiful retreat centre where I am going to learn new movement practices I can bring home to integrate in my work and do some inner tending so I can come back clear and inspired to support those of you who see me for massage.

Pictured above is Allie Griffiths RMT who will be covering for me while I’m away :) she is the sweetest human and has great hands. Please book yourself a treatment with Allie in February! She will most likely, be staying on beyond Feb too, so if you love her, then you can keep seeing her 🥰

Ok thats alll!!! Thanks for reading.

Hello sweet clients who follow me on insta & fb!

Just wanted to update you all that I got another concussion a month ago, and have been up and down since. Some of you know as I’ve had to cancel treatments with you, and some of you may be wondering why I haven’t managed to get you off my waitlist.. hehe.

Concussions are confusing, and some days I feel that I am totally better and other days I feel deep in fog, confusion and anxiety.

That all to be said: I am going to do my best over the next while as I heal to take as much time as I need to rest when my system asks for it.

So I may have to cancel your massages on the days I am symptomatic, and I may not be able to reschedule you (I will do my best to but sometimes it’s hard to find extra time with my full schedule).

Im sorry for the inconvenience this might cause, and if you need recommendations of rmt’s to see, let me know 🌞

I appreciate each of you so much, I feel truly blessed to have the most amazing clientele and community.

Ps. Stay tuned for another update soon on some new happenings in my world :)

Hello sweet clients! I am deciding to work only two days a week for July and August to take some much needed time to tune in reconnect with life outside of work - with the rythmns of nature and my spirit 🌱✨

I may work some random extra days when I feel like it, so stay tuned for updates - I will post additional openings as story’s on my instagram! You are also welcome to add yourself to my waitlist on Jane-app 😌

Apologies for the inconvenience, please reach out if you have any questions or want a recommendation for another RMT to see :) (I highly recommend both & .rmt who work alongside me at the Baker Wellness Centre).

Sending lots of love to you all ✨
