Learning can begin with unlearning.
I was born in 1994, and the history I grew up with painted a distorted picture of Canada’s “discovery.” The stories of Indigenous Nations, Residential Schools, the Sixties Scoop, the Doctrine of Discovery, the realities of colonialism, and much more were absent from what I was taught.
If you’re my age or older, chances are you were given a similar version. Choosing to unlearn that narrative isn’t easy—it takes humility. But that humility is what creates space to learn the truths that were kept from us, and to move closer to accountability, reconciliation, and right relationship.
