✨ Because I am a girl… ✨
Just like at our first empowerment camp, youth at last week’s Pictou Girls & Gender Diverse Empowerment Camp took part in a powerful activity inspired by Because I Am a Girl, I Can Change the World. 💬🌍

Together, we reflected on what it means to be a girl—not just here, but around the world. Some campers even shared personal stories, showing incredible empathy, strength, and insight. 💜

Our poster filled up fast with affirmations that reflect how bold, thoughtful, and creative our campers are.

We had so much fun at our Girls & Gender Diverse Empowerment Camp in Pictou last week!! 💜🌟

We kicked off Day 1 by getting to know each other with games, surveys, and a collaborative camp playlist! After some positive affirmations and icebreakers, we got creative with button making, tie-dye tote bags, and pot painting. We ended the day with a thoughtful discussion about social media and how it impacts our lives. 🎨👜💬

Day 2 focused on identity and empowerment. We played Pictionary and decorated water bottles before diving into Because I Am a Girl, I Can Change the World. Campers shared powerful reflections, created flower petal affirmations, and filled our posters with bold and inspiring messages about what it means to be a girl. 💐📝💖

On Day 3, we turned inward to focus on mindfulness and self-care. We explored ways to care for ourselves during stressful moments, decorated personal mirrors, practiced yoga with Dorothy, and made calming self-talk bracelets. We wrapped up the day with some sunshine, chalk art, and of course—slime! 🧘‍♀️🪞🌈

We're so thankful for each camper who brought their energy, creativity, and courage to camp this week. And a big thank-you to the Creative Pictou County Studio for hosting us in such an inspiring space and encouraging us to get messy! 🫟

We echo this statement. We are here if you need support.

We echo this statement. We are here if you need support.

To E.M. and to all survivors of sexual violence: we see you. We believe you. We honour your strength in speaking your truth.

We know that today’s outcome is deeply painful for many. It reflects the ongoing challenges survivors face in navigating systems that have historically failed to prioritize their experiences and needs. Once again, we have watched as our legal system failed to provide accountability on issues of extremely troubling behaviour.

This case and the public conversation surrounding it have stirred up anger, grief, and exhaustion. These feelings are valid. Moments like this can bring forward painful reminders of how difficult it can be to seek safety, support, and justice.

Regardless of any verdict, our commitment remains unchanged. Survivors must be heard, respected, and supported. This holds true whether or not they report, and whether or not the legal system reflects their truth.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with E.M. and with all survivors. This includes those who share their stories and those who cannot. Believing survivors and working to end gender-based violence are responsibilities we all share.

You are not alone. We are with you.

✨ Because I am a girl... ✨

On Day 3 of camp, we read a story from Because I am a Girl, I Can Change the World and reflected on what it means to be a girl today. Each camper created a powerful poster celebrating their strength, identity, and voice—and this collage brings their words to life! 💖🌈

From “I am powerful” to “I can cry” to “I matter,” these affirmations are a reminder that there’s no one way to be a girl—every voice matters. 💬👑

We’re so proud of what each camper shared and created! 💪🫶

We had an incredible time at our first Empowerment Camp of the summer! 💖✨

We kicked off Day 1 by getting to know each other through fun icebreakers and making our own name buttons! We talked about social media, shared positive affirmations, and got creative painting flower pots that they got to take home with some seeds. 🎨🪴

Day 2 focused on mindfulness and self-care. We made our own bath bombs, practiced yoga with Dorothy, went on a mindful nature walk, and created self-talk bracelets filled with empowering words. 🧘‍♀️💬

On Day 3, we explored what it means to be a girl and how to uplift one another. We read Because I Am a Girl and made posters celebrating all the unique things that make us who we are. Then we crafted beaded sunglasses and wrapped up the day with sidewalk chalk art and some fun in the sun. 😎🌸

On Day 4, we reflected on self-esteem through a mirror activity, had delicious subs for lunch, enjoyed time at the playground, and of course—made some super satisfying slime! 🩵🛝🧼

A big thank-you to the Ward One Social & Recreation Centre in New Glasgow for providing the space that helped make this week so special. 💛
Stay tuned for next week’s camp! 🌟
