Ryan Straschnitzki’s life changed forever in April 2018. He was a member of the junior hockey team, the Humboldt Broncos.
While on the way to a game, their team bus was struck by a semi-truck. The crash shocked not just the hockey community, but all of Canada. Many players and staff lost their lives, and Ryan was left paralyzed.
Ryan’s world was turned upside down. He couldn’t do what he used to—but that didn’t stop him from finding a new purpose. After his recovery, Ryan founded the Straz Strong Foundation, a charity that empowers individuals with disabilities. The foundation focuses on making adaptive sports more accessible, promoting physical activity and inclusion for everyone.
Ryan took a tragedy and turned it into something positive to help others. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to the country.
