Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety
Timmins Kirkland Lake District

The Ministry of Natural Resources– Timmins Kirkland Lake District is advising area residents that a 'Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety' is in effect in the District until Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Residents in Kirkland Lake and the surrounding area of the District should exercise special caution around rivers and streams. Spring temperatures along with forecasted precipitation throughout the district are expected to increase melting, resulting in increased runoff and increased levels and flows. Please alert any children under your care to these possible dangers and supervise their activities.

The Ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions.

Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

Special Weather Alert - Advisory on Potential for Flooding
Posted on: April 9, 2026

A wintry mix is expected starting Thursday and continuing off and on into next week.

The warmer temperatures and rain may result in rapid snowmelt and potential flooding in low-lying areas. Since the ground remains frozen, water may struggle to absorb into the soil, increasing the risk of pooling and runoff.

Temperatures may fall below the freezing mark at times and any water on roadways and walkways will freeze, creating icy and slippery conditions.

Public Works crews are actively working to minimize the risk by:

• Clearing ice from catch basins to improve drainage
• Opening culvert ends to promote water flow
• Monitoring known trouble spots throughout Town

How You Can Help:
• Clear snow away from your home’s foundation, window wells, and any nearby catch basins if safe to do so
• Ensure downspouts are directed away from your home
• Avoid parking over catch basins or blocking drainage paths

We appreciate your cooperation as the Town works to reduce the impact of potential flooding. For urgent drainage concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at 705-567-9365, or 705-568-7766 (after hours).

A Flood Watch is in effect until Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to keep a close watch on local conditions and use caution around lakes, rivers, creeks, streams, shorelines, and banks as water levels and flows continue to rise during the spring freshet.

Those in low-lying areas and along shorelines should monitor conditions and prepare accordingly. Please also supervise children and pets near water, and avoid deteriorating lake and river ice.

For more information, residents can monitor Environment Canada bulletins and the Ontario Surface Water Monitoring Centre.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RED Drug Alert Issued for Northeastern Public Health North Area

Timmins (Ontario) – In response to an acute increase in suspected opioid poisonings, Northeastern Public Health, in collaboration with the Opioid Emergency Response Task Force, has issued a RED Drug Alert for communities within the Northeastern Public Health North area.

“This heightened RED Drug Alert calls for increased community awareness and prevention amid the ongoing opioid crisis”, says Krista Green, Program Manager at Northeastern Public Health. “Any type of illicit drug – regardless of how it is being used – may contain fatal substances that can result in unintentional opioid poisonings. Staying informed, seeking help, and accessing healthcare resources are key to preventing harm”.

Northeastern Public Health and the Opioid Emergency Response Task Force is urging individuals to carry naloxone, a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid poisoning.

Key Recommendations:

· Never use alone. If possible, use with someone you trust and/or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) before using at 1-888-688-6677.

· Carry naloxone and multiple doses. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid poisoning. It is easy to use and available free of charge at most pharmacies and in all Northeastern Public Health offices.

· Call 911 or contact the emergency response service available in your community if you suspect that someone is experiencing an opioid poisoning.

Northeastern Public Health and the Opioid Response Task Force will continue to monitor the situation closely. Community members are encouraged to stay informed and to share this RED drug alert widely.

For more information and resources, contact Northeastern Public Health.
