is “traditional” in that it is one where the counsellor intentionally guides the client through THEIR self-determined change process in order to achieve their goals. We view the development of human beings through the lens of ‘biopsychosocial and spiritual interactions”. Both of us are currently in training to become Natural Bioenergetics (Health Kinesiology) practitioners because we recognize the need for a more holistic approach to therapy. We have come to understand that when the body comes into balance, the natural healing power (vital force or physis) of the body is released and therefore able to do what is necessary to reduce the stressors in the mind and body. This, in turn, brings healing to the whole person, at the cellular level. The counselling relationship is one where the counsellor (who has received training and continues to receive training) intentionally guides the client through THEIR self-determined change process. Since the client is viewed as the “expert” on his or her own life, it becomes the responsibility of the counsellor to work ‘in tandem’ with you, the client, in order to achieve your goals. The counsellor listens, guides, comforts, and challenges (using both intuitive skills and practiced theories) all the while keeping in mind that you, as the client, MUST always remain in charge of the process. Counselling should NEVER be about the counsellor taking control. Our role as counsellors will be to look for and identify stressors that may be outside your conscious awareness. Because we are not emotionally linked into your story, we can offer you our professional expertise with the hope that our insight may lead you to a fuller, more balanced perspective. During counselling sessions, you will be given tools to effectively take charge of your decisions and create the life that you want to achieve. It may seem simpler to have someone else make decisions for you, but as a professional, our mandate is clear: “support but never control”.
