As we close off Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we stand with the the individuals and families living with Alzheimer’s every day 💜 This month, we were reminded that Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that damages brain cells, often leading to short-term memory loss, changes in behavior, and motor difficulties. Reducing the stigma towards Alzheimer’s starts with understanding, patience, and compassionate care! Remember to always see the person beyond their diagnosis. Although it affects the brain and changes memory, movement, and behavior, it does not take away one’s worth, feelings, or dignity 🤗🧠

For our next post on our Alzheimer’s Awareness Month series, our home support workers shared simple tips on how we can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. While Alzheimer’s cannot entirely be prevented, we can always reduce the risk by doing simple lifestyle choices while in our youth 💪🍎

🚭 AVOID SMOKING: Smoking is a significant risk factor in many diseases and sickness as it affects every organ

🚴 PROTECT YOUR HEAD: Always wear helmets during high-risk activities and situations to prevent injuries to the head

🫀 MANAGE HEALTH CONDITIONS: Make sure to go to regular check-ups to monitor and manage blood pressure, maintain blood sugar levels, and always be in the know about your body’s condition

🏃 STAY ACTIVE: Aim to get at least around 2.5 hours of moderate activity like brisk walking, jogging, or cycling every week to boost blood flow to the brain

👫 STAY SOCIALLY ENGAGED: Regular interaction with family, friends, and with other people helps protect cognitive health. Social engagement actively challenges the brain through memory, problem-solving, and attention.

Alzheimer’s chooses no one. But we can always reduce the risk by adopting a healthy lifestyle while we are young. ICYMI: January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Today, our home support workers who have worked with some of our dementia care patients shared tips on how to care for people with Alzheimer’s. Here are just a few of them below:

💬 Speak SLOWLY, CLEARLY, and provide simple instructions when talking to your patient. Too much information can overwhelm someone with Alzheimer’s.

🔄 Establish a CONSISTENT ROUTINE as it can avoid confusion. Predictability makes people living with Alzheimer’s feel more secure and independent.

🤗 Use FRIENDLY body language: smile, maintain eye contact, and gently handle them as it can make them feel safe and comforted.

🗑️ DECLUTTER living spaces to reduce clutter-induced stress and prevent falls.

🏷️ SECURE hazardous household items and LABEL signs to ensure their safety and assist with their orientation.

👥 ENGAGE with your patient as it can improve their mood and help maintain genuine connection. Do activities they enjoy like looking at their life’s photographs, singing, or playing puzzles.

Preparing to understand someone living with Alzheimer’s makes it easier to navigate the inevitable challenges ahead. January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month in Canada. In basic terminology, Alzheimer’s is a brain condition that slowly damages your memory, thinking, and learning skills. It is known to be the most common cause of dementia, especially in seniors. Alzheimer's is rapidly growing, with Alzheimer’s Society of Canada stating that an estimated 750,000 Canadians are living with it and expect that number to grow to one million Canadians by 2030. The purpose of Alzheimer’s Awareness is to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and promote action with regards to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

For this month, we will be sharing tips from our home support workers on how to provide simple care for your loved ones with Alzheimer’s and how to reduce the risk of having it yourself 🙏
