Today marks the final day for our 2026 CAPS Interns from the Shakopee High School!

These seven students have been an absolute joy over the past few months. Staff, residents, and families all appreciated their creativity, meaningful conversations, and the time they dedicated to visiting and connecting with others.

During their time with us, they contributed to a variety of projects, including Resident Directories, calm boxes, and personalized painted artwork for each resident to display in their rooms - leaving a lasting impact.

Take a look at their time with us at Friendship Manor!

Our March Resident of the Month is, Howie!

Howie was born in Minneapolis, MN on St. Patrick’s Day in 1938 and is a lifelong Shakopee resident. February marked 66 years of marriage to his wife Jan, with their union turning into a family of 6 children, 15 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

His career consisted of roles working at Rahr Malting, as a sales representative for F***y Farmer Candy, serving as Deputy Clerk of the Court at the Shakopee Courthouse, and then ultimately retiring from the Shakopee Public Works Department in 1999. While his retirement days were defined by days on the golf course, he now spends his time sitting out in the sun whenever he can, playing cards and visiting with his family. Being a sports lover, he enjoys watching most sports, especially baseball, even more so when a grandson is pitching.

Fun fact: He scored the winning run for the Shakopee Indians in the Championship game of the 1959 Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament held in St. Cloud ⚾️

Howie and Jan have been at Friendship Manor about 5 months.

Our February Resident of the Month is, Betty!

Betty was born in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota and graduated from Sebeka High School. She loved playing basketball and wasn't afraid to get a little competitive!

Betty grew up with 3 brothers whom taught her how to hold her own at a young age. Following High School, Betty worked for MMC, selling clothing, before getting married and moving to Shakopee. She and her husband later raised 3 children. Eventually leaving MMC, she spent 22 years working at Sears, ending in management.

After retiring she hit the road and lived in a motor home enjoying her independence and adventure. She spent time in Southern Texas, Florida, and eventually found her way back home to Minnesota.

She loves to cook, bake, garden and fish, and she's the happiest when she's spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. On Friday nights, she enjoys the tradition of going to the Casino with her granddaughter, and yes, she usually has a system 💲

Her favorite foods are cabbage rolls and pickles and she's a firm believer that pickles belong with just about everything! Her favorite companion is her dog, Austin, who currently lives with family but still runs the show.

Betty says she has lived a full life, enjoyed a few adventures and learned that good food, family time and a little fun go a long way! Betty has been at Friendship Manor just over one year.

Woops! January was so fun, it flew right by without showcasing, Gene, our January Resident of the Month!

Gene was born and raised on a farm right here in Marystown in Shakopee. He is the youngest of 5 children. Gene served in the United States Army after High School for 2 years. He is very proud of his service to our country. Fun Fact - While in the Army, Gene earned the nickname "Smiley", and for years many people only knew him by that nickname. (Not a bad nickname to have) 😀

Gene met his wife, Jackie, a Prior Lake girl, a few years after his time in the Army. They married in 1960 and had three children. Just this past June, Gene and Jackie celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary! As lifelong members of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Shakopee, it is very special to have Gene continue his connection with the parish here at Friendship Manor.

Gene is a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an active person on membership activities, building maintenance projects and pancake breakfast fundraisers. Gene was also part of the maintenance team at Rahr and frequently rode his bike the short distance to work each day, retiring in 1998. Family was told that his metal round top lunch box is still in the breakroom above the doorway as a tribute to his years of service and dedication.

For fun, Gene loved road trips and were one of his favorite family vacation activities. It was not uncommon to get up very early in the morning to start off on a road trip to the Detroit Lakes area or Chicago to visit friends and family when the children were young. As the kids were later in their elementary years, Kamp Dels in Waterville became a family favorite destination.

Gene turned 89 this past November and has been at Friendship Manor just over a year. He spends his days working on puzzles in the Wing 3 lounge and likes to play BINGO. Raising his hand announcing, "Got it", with each win and showing that smile is a treasure we all love.

Our 2026 CAPS students from Shakopee High School are well underway!

These seven students joined us at the end of January and will finish up mid March. Each of these seniors has an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare after graduation. During their time with us, they will be shadowing various departments and working on a project that they will present to staff at the end of the program.

This marks Friendship Manor’s 9th year partnering with the Shakopee High School CAPS program, and it’s always a rewarding experience to mentor future healthcare professionals and give them a hands-on look at what it looks like to work in long-term care.
