How Massage Therapy and Acupuncture Can Help

At New West Wellness Centre in New Westminster, we are committed to providing inclusive, gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Gender-affirming (transgender) surgeries are an important part of care for many people in British Columbia, and comprehensive post-operative support can play a key role in recovery.

Massage therapy and acupuncture are commonly used to support post-surgical healing, pain management, mobility, and nervous system regulation before and after transgender surgery.

WHEN: Timing Massage Therapy and Acupuncture Around Transgender Surgery

Before Surgery

In the weeks or months prior to surgery, massage therapy and acupuncture can help:

Reduce muscle tension and chronic pain
Improve circulation and tissue health
Manage pre-surgical stress, anxiety, and sleep issues
Support nervous system regulation
Preparing the body before surgery may support smoother post-operative recovery.

After Surgery

Once cleared by a surgeon or medical provider, massage therapy and acupuncture can be introduced gradually.

At New West Wellness Centre, post-surgical care may include:

Gentle, indirect techniques during early recovery
Support for swelling and restricted movement (when appropriate)
Scar tissue support once healing allows
Treatment of compensatory pain in the neck, back, hips, or shoulders
Long-term support for posture, movement, and chronic pain

WHAT: How Massage Therapy and Acupuncture Support Recovery

Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) in BC are trained to work with post-surgical clients and adapt care based on medical guidelines.

Massage therapy may help:

Reduce muscle guarding and postural tension
Improve circulation and lymphatic flow (when indicated)
Support scar tissue mobility after healing
Address secondary pain from altered movement patterns
Improve overall comfort and body awareness during recovery

Acupuncture in New Westminster

Acupuncture is frequently used in post-operative and recovery-based care.

It may support:

Pain and inflammation management
Stress and anxiety reduction
Sleep regulation
Digestive symptoms related to medications
Nervous system balance during recovery
Treatments are individualized and can be safely adapted for those undergoing hormone therapy or surgical recovery.

WHY: Inclusive, Gender-Affirming Care Matters

Whole-Person Recovery

Transgender surgery impacts physical, emotional, and neurological systems. Massage therapy and acupuncture support whole-person healing, not just the surgical site.

Trauma-Informed, Gender-Affirming Care in New Westminster

At New West Wellness Centre, care is provided with a trauma-informed, respectful approach that:

Respects names, pronouns, and identities
Prioritizes consent and clear communication
Adapts treatment to each individual’s comfort and goals
This is especially important for transgender individuals who may have experienced barriers or trauma in healthcare settings.

Supporting Long-Term Health Outcomes

By improving mobility, circulation, and nervous system regulation, massage therapy and acupuncture may:

Reduce prolonged post-surgical discomfort
Support a return to daily activity and movement
Improve long-term quality of life following surgery

5 Stress-Busting Stretches to Ease Your Way Into the Holidays
The holiday season in New Westminster is festive, exciting, and… let’s be honest — a little overwhelming. Between social events, family gatherings, financial strain, travel stress, and never-ending to-do lists, it’s common for your body to feel the impact.

A moderate amount of stress can help keep you focused and energized, but holiday overload often leads to muscle tension, especially in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. Many people unknowingly hold stress in their bodies, causing stiffness, headaches, and discomfort.

Prioritizing self-care during this busy season can make all the difference. Along with staying active and giving yourself adequate downtime, try these five quick and effective stretches to help your body release holiday tension.

1. Neck Release

Perfect for tight neck muscles and tech-neck.

Sit or stand tall with your spine aligned.

Gently tilt your head toward your left shoulder.

Hold for 10 seconds, breathing slowly.

Repeat on the right side.

This simple stretch helps release built-up tension and improves mobility.

2. Shoulder Rolls

Great for office workers and anyone carrying holiday stress in their shoulders.

Stand relaxed with arms at your sides.

Roll your shoulders forward in slow, controlled circles five times.

Reverse direction and roll backward five times.

This movement reopens the chest, relaxes the upper back, and improves posture.

3. Reach for the Sky

A wonderful whole-body reset.

Stand tall with your back and neck straight.

Reach both arms overhead, palms facing each other.

Inhale and gently bend to the left, holding for 10 seconds.

Return to center and repeat on the right.

This stretch helps lengthen the spine and improve flexibility.

4. Lower Body Blast (Gentle Knee Bends)

Ideal for improving circulation and loosening stiff legs.

Stand tall and place a hand on a chair or counter for support.

Slowly bend your knees as if starting a small squat.

Straighten back up with control.

Repeat 10 times.

Keep movements gentle and pain-free — this is about mobility, not strength training.

5. Open Wide (Jaw Stretch)

Perfect for people who clench their jaw or grind their teeth during stressful seasons.

Sit or stand with your shoulders relaxed.

Slowly open your mouth wide to stretch the jaw muscles.

Repeat five times.

This helps relieve jaw tension, which is commonly linked to holiday stress.

Start the Holiday Season Feeling Your Best

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. A few minutes of stretching each day can help reduce tension, improve mobility, and keep your body feeling balanced throughout the busy season.
