Today, the Alberta Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction hosted a presentation at the Last Door Calgary Recovery Community for Master’s students in Social Policy from the University of Calgary.

Students learned about the and explored how recovery-oriented systems are helping transform lives across the province.

The visit wrapped up with a tour of the facility, a great opportunity to see recovery in action!

It’s inspiring to see the next generation of leaders engaging with solutions that focus on hope, connection, and long-term recovery. 💚

Congratulations Gail on your 35 years clean. Gail has been part of the recovery community since her days in treatment when Last Door operated a Women’s Program. Now semi retired, Gail facilitated our Partners Program, services for our clients partners for over 20 years. Thank you for staying and being part of. You have helped countless amounts of people heal from the harms of addiction.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀. For too long, addiction has been treated differently from every other health condition. When someone has cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, the goal is remission and recovery. Yet when it comes to addiction, our systems often stop short of those same expectations.

Addiction is the only disease where the system waits for the person to be ready. Ready for what?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 ... 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲.

In 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳, Last Door Recovery Society recognized the urgent need to bring together research, science, policy leaders, clinicians, and people with lived experience to talk about a better way forward- 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆-𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 (𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗖) 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.

Today, some provinces across Canada are beginning to shift policy in this direction. The conversation is changing. The tide is turning toward a healthcare response that 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Recovery Capital Conference - Overcoming Addiction

Thousands are expected to attend three days of learning, collaboration, and solutions during Recovery Month Canada in September.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 a full day of the conference is dedicated to both addiction-trained AND non-addiction-trained physicians, nurse practitioners, and psychiatrists, 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆-𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲.

If addiction and open drug use are affecting your community, this conference is part of the solution.

Ask your local leaders, policymakers, healthcare providers, and community organizations to learn about Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care. Encourage them to attend.

🌱 Horticultural Therapy at Last Door 🌱
Spring is coming to the gardens at Last Door Keystone Retreat! The seedlings are growing and getting ready for transplanting, onions have germinated, and the tomatoes 🍅 are only a few weeks away from flowering. Our fruit trees have been whitewashed and mulched to protect them, and the Keystone Gardens are ready for another season.

Volunteers have prepared the beds, seeded wildflowers, and planted the first lettuce, broccoli, and arugula—now just waiting for sunshine. 🌞
Horticultural therapy is an important part of recovery at Last Door. Clients help grow organic food in our gardens, which becomes part of the farm-to-table meals served in our kitchen.

Planting seeds, growing food, and sharing meals together ! recovery in action. 🌿🍅
