Dental anxiety and dental fear often cause people to procrastinate with scheduling their dental appointments. Not many patients have a receptive dentist who understands the struggle with avoiding dental care. It’s a challenge to find dentists who offer efficient, modern dentistry in a stress-free and judgment-free environment. Here are some strategies that will make dental appointments easier and more productive.

A busy life can sometimes lead people to postpone their dental appointment. Finding time and scheduling appointments can be difficult for anyone in today’s busy society, however the end result of delaying important dental care can end up taking even more of your time.

If you suspect that you may have a dental problem, or you have been told that you have a condition that requires repair, there are advantages to acting sooner rather than later. Here, we will outline a few of the reasons dental treatment is so beneficial:

Early care stops the problem. It is better to obtain care when your dental condition is mild. Postponing care allows progression, and we want you to avoid that.

Schedule recommended treatment promptly after your diagnosis. Depending on the procedure, prompt care is typically straightforward, and quick. Prompt treatment is cost effective. The more time, effort, and materials needed to fully restore a dental problem, the more costly the treatment as well. Routine dental visits keep your investment in a healthy smile as low as possible.

Preventive dentistry keeps your mouth and teeth healthy. With preventive care, you can avoid dental problems and lower the risk of other health issues as well. It is possible that a dental condition could be diagnosed and treated before developing any pain. Don’t delay or skip your routine dental cleaning and exams. Preventative care helps maintain optimal oral health and provides strong, clean teeth, and a healthy smile!

Our priority is your well-being. Wherever you are in terms of oral health, know that Exact can help you achieve your dental goals by recommending dentists who work with the latest technologies that’s partnered with our CAD/CAM automated laboratory.

Surviving holiday stress and the end-of-the-year rush in dentistry

Just when you thought slowing down at the end of the year was in sight, think again. While you’re still busy from the back-to-school rush last August, now you’re even busier. The holiday season is upon us, and couple that with the end-of-the-year rush for many of your dental patients who want to maximize their insurance benefits, and your stress level is escalating. Just remember, you are not alone!

We almost expect this overwhelming feeling during the holidays, with the season starting earlier and earlier every year. The holidays bring more of everything, both good and bad, and in a service industry we live the craziness day in and day out. While there are many opportunities for fun with family and friends, there's also the flipside—more money spent, more pressure to do everything in less time, and more chances for conflict both in and out of the office. In dentistry, we face harrowing schedules, umpteen emergency walk-ins, and patient procrastination—those who schedule their restorative work and ask the dental team to complete the treatment during an unrealistic timespan. Many of us feel like a pressure cooker with the top ready to blow off.

With a little planning and helpful tips to let you soar through the season, things don’t have to be this way! To help you navigate your holiday stress both in and out of the office, consider some of the following tips:

Define your mission, and express gratitude this holiday season, both personally and professionally.
In times of chaos and stress, having a clear purpose can help you meet expectations head on. Actively count your blessings by making a list of the people and things you appreciate in your life.

At the office: When you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remember why the holidays are important to you, your team members, and your patients. Practice extra kindness and gratitude during this time and you may just make your patients’ day with your thoughtfulness. We don’t know what struggles others may be going through and for many, the holidays are a difficult time.

Outside of the office: If your mission is to connect with family and friends, being together is all that really matters. If it's rest and relaxation you're after, it’s essential to take time for yourself. Send a card or email that expresses your thankfulness to the people on your gratitude list. Don't neglect to do things that put you and your family in touch with the significance of the holidays, such as going to services, volunteering, or contacting extended family. The holidays offer a terrific opportunity for reconnecting with old friends or long-lost family members. Forget about whose fault it was or what you wish you had done. Now is the time to let people know that you are thinking about them. More than likely, they have also been thinking about you and will be delighted to hear from you. Spread the cheer!

Respect your physical and emotional limits, both at home and at the office.
If you’re exhausted, take time to rest or nap. If you’re hungry, eat. If you’re overburdened with extra holiday tasks, try to let some of your other responsibilities slide for a few weeks.

At the office: Often, when the holidays roll around, so do the illnesses and viruses. You may find your team short a member or two, and teamwork becomes more important than ever. Offer to assist a team member if you have a few extra minutes. Not only will it relieve stress for that person, but the day will go by more smoothly with a group effort.

Outside of the office: A well-maintained machine works wonderfully. The same goes for your mind, body, and spirit. Remember to take time for yourself. As few as a couple of minutes here and there throughout the day can do wonders to restore your mind and body. Practice moderation and your body will thank you. When it comes to holiday meals, avoid skipping meals to compensate for what you plan to eat because this may lead you to overeat. But don’t scold yourself if you do overeat—you deserve it for the craziness you’re handling!

Maintain realistic expectations, don’t expect people to change, and expect a letdown or two.
Life would be wonderful if it was predictable. We could plan and then be less stressed. But would we be any happier? Probably not.

At the office: Keeping a level head at the office during the holidays can be a challenge. You’re allowed an occasional meltdown, but not every day. Whether you are part of the clinical team working as efficiently as possible to stay on schedule, or part of the administrative team doing whatever you can to make all of your patients happy, it’s not easy. Be proactive and look ahead in the schedule for areas that may not run smoothly. Two sets of eyes are better than one, and attention to detail is key to a harmonious team environment. The patient who is always scheduling last minute may need to be prompted to schedule ahead of time. People can be trained with repetition. Remember to pat yourself on the back at the end of each day for stellar teamwork and excellent customer service!

Outside of the office: It might be easier to control things at the office than at home. Stuff happens when we least expect it. Kids whine or misbehave, no matter what gifts they receive. Expect them to act as they usually do when Santa or the Elf on the Shelf aren’t watching. As much as we would like people to change, especially during the holidays, they won’t; that’s human nature. And if you feel a bit deflated after all of the holiday excitement, have no fear. Spring is right around the corner (hopefully)!

Don't let the end-of-the-year rush at the office and during the holidays cause you anxiety. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend. Learn to recognize your own holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so that you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. Practice extra kindness at the office and lend a helping hand whenever possible. This will make everyone’s day much more pleasant. With a little planning and positive thinking, you can find the extra energy, peace, and joy to survive the end of the year and the holidays. Best wishes and happy holidays to you and yours!

Periodontitis (per-e-o-don-TIE-tis), also called gum disease, is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen or lead to tooth loss.

Periodontitis is common but largely preventable. It's usually the result of poor oral hygiene. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups can greatly improve your chances of successful treatment for periodontitis and can also reduce your chance of developing it.

Healthy gums are firm and pale pink and fit snugly around teeth. Signs and symptoms of periodontitis can include:

Swollen or puffy gums
Bright red, dusky red or purplish gums
Gums that feel tender when touched
Gums that bleed easily
Pink-tinged toothbrush after brushing
Spitting out blood when brushing or flossing your teeth
Bad breath
Pus between your teeth and gums
Loose teeth or loss of teeth
Painful chewing
New spaces developing between your teeth
Gums that pull away from your teeth (recede), making your teeth look longer than normal
A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

In most cases, the development of periodontitis starts with plaque — a sticky film composed mainly of bacteria. If left untreated, here's how plaque can eventually advance to periodontitis:

Plaque forms on your teeth when starches and sugars in food interact with bacteria normally found in your mouth. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day removes plaque, but plaque re-forms quickly.

Plaque can harden under your gumline into tartar (calculus) if it stays on your teeth. Tartar is more difficult to remove and it's filled with bacteria. The longer plaque and tartar remain on your teeth, the more damage they can do. You can't get rid of tartar by brushing and flossing — you need a professional dental cleaning to remove it.

Plaque can cause gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. Gingivitis is irritation and inflammation of the part of your gum tissue around the base of your teeth (gingiva). Gingivitis can be reversed with professional treatment and good home oral care.

Ongoing gum inflammation can cause periodontitis, eventually causing pockets to develop between your gums and teeth that fill with plaque, tartar and bacteria. In time, these pockets become deeper, filling with more bacteria. If not treated, these deep infections cause a loss of tissue and bone, and ultimately you may lose one or more teeth. Also, ongoing chronic inflammation can put a strain on your immune system.

Factors that can increase your risk of periodontitis include:

Gingivitis
Poor oral health habits
Smoking or chewing to***co
Hormonal changes, such as those related to pregnancy or menopause
Recreational drug use, such as smoking ma*****na or va**ng
Obesity
Inadequate nutrition, including vitamin C deficiency
Genetics
Certain medications that cause dry mouth or gum changes
Conditions that cause decreased immunity, such as leukemia, HIV/AIDS and cancer treatment
Certain diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease

A psychological study done in Germany during the 1980’s found that the men who kissed their wives before going to work in the morning lived an average of five years longer than husbands who didn’t kiss.

Dr. Arthur Szabo, professor of psychology at the University of Kiel, collected data for two years from several dozen physicians, psychologists, and leading German insurance companies that cooperated to provide actuarial data. Szabo published his findings in a West German magazine called Selecta.

The kissing husbands earned 20 to 35 percent more money and used less sick time than their peers who left with no goodbye kiss. In this same study, a sampling of Germany’s top 110 industrial managers shows that the 87 percent who left home after kissing their wives saw an increase in pay and held their management positions. This same research outfit reported that not kissing one’s wife before leaving in the morning significantly increases the possibility of a car accident.

Here is Szabo’s summary of findings:

“Husbands who leave home in the morning without kissing their wives do so either because the couple has had a spat, or because they have gown apart. In either case, the husband begins the day with a negative attitude. He tends to be moody and depressed. He is disinterested in his work and surroundings. While a great many men feign indifference to their wives nearly all of them are deceiving themselves. Even if a man has ceased to love his wife, he is still influenced by her attitude toward him. Our research proves this and conclusively so. A husband who kisses his wife every morning before he goes to the office begins the day with a positive attitude. His feeling of harmony is reflected physiologically as well as mentally.”

The psychologists who analyzed the data do not believe it is the kissing alone that accounts for such a significant outcome between the two groups; it’s the positive attitude that is strongly associated with a healthy lifestyle. It’s quite clear from the study that the strong bond that comes from regular kissing promotes not only emotional well-being but physical health as well.

Enjoying the Natural High

During the act of kissing sensations go directly to the limbic system that is the part of the brain associated with love, passion and lust. As the neural impulses travel from lips, tongue, facial muscles and skin, a love cocktail is produced in the body causing a natural high. The love cocktail is composed of neurotransmitters and hormones including dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, adrenaline, and endorphins.

Utilize the natural high that comes with a terrific kiss. A multifaceted approach encourages couples to work out challenging issues that trouble them by learning to communicate well, negotiate for their needs, practice getting complete by using learning from their experience, apologize for causing harm, and forgive after having been harmed. These methods clear a passageway for the fondness and affection system to flourish and for romance to become a regular feature of their partnership once again.

Regular check-ins, dates, fun adventures, and novel experiences all work together to bring a relationship back to a place of enjoyment. By adding in the built-in bonding powers of sensual delight that Mother Nature gave us, the shift in behaviors and attitudes conspire to heal a damaged partnership and move a good relationship into the great zone.

Sincere, intentional, heartfelt kissing is an essential ingredient in that process. Kissing therapy goes a long way to restore the ingredients that may have slipped out of the daily practice due to painful arguing, disengagement, or preoccupation with work or children. To intentionally engage in more sensual kissing brings a level of affection, respect, and love back to the partnership. Kissing is a sign that there is a new beginning to a glowing partnership, or a continuation of a connection characterized by attention, connection, and caring.

Kissing is a communication form that can transcend words and convey a feeling of appreciation, trust, support, attachment, security and even adoration. Good-morning kisses, goodnight kisses, greeting and leaving kisses, foreplay kisses, kisses during s*x, and juicy kisses just for the hell of it, are all good.

And when it comes to kissing, more is definitely better. Kissing can restore not only emotional well-being and physical health but longevity as well. Always available if we are awake and aware to recognize the awesome benefits, we can celebrate and rejoice in nature’s glorious gift.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

All dental amalgam restorations contain approximately 50% mercury, and reports and research are consistent that these fillings emit mercury v***rs.

Scientific research demonstrates that dental mercury amalgam exposes dental professionals, dental staff, dental patients, and fetuses to releases of mercury v***r, mercury-containing particulate, and/or other forms of mercury contamination.

Furthermore, mercury v***r is known to be released from dental mercury amalgam fillings at higher rates during brushing, cleaning, clenching of teeth, chewing, etc., and mercury is also known to be released during the placement, replacement, and removal of dental mercury amalgam fillings.

The IAOMT safe amalgam removal protocol recommendations were most recently updated on July 19, 2019. Also, on July 1, 2016, the IAOMT protocol recommendations were officially renamed as the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART), and a training course for IAOMT dentists to become certified in SMART was initiated.

Utilizing the available scientific evidence, the IAOMT has developed extensive safety recommendations for removal of existing dental mercury amalgam fillings, including detailed protective measures that are to be utilized for the procedure. The IAOMT’s recommendations build upon traditional safe amalgam removal techniques such as the use of masks, water irrigation, and high volume suction by supplementing these conventional strategies with a number of additional protective measures, the need for which have only recently been identified in scientific research.
