Low back pain is one of the most common conditions we see as physiotherapists, and something many people experience at some point in their lives.

At Royal City Physio, treatment typically includes a combination of exercise, manual therapy, and education to help reduce pain, restore movement, and build strength. In some cases, we may also incorporate dry needling to help manage pain and improve tolerance to movement and exercise.

While these approaches form the foundation of treatment, every assessment and plan of care is individualized. We focus on evidence-based strategies and active treatment approaches rather than relying heavily on passive modalities.

Our goal is to help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to the activities that matter to you.

Big congratulations to Chris and Diego on completing their Level 2 Lower Extremity Manual Therapy course this weekend 👏

Paige has previously completed her Level 2 Lower Extremity training, and we’re proud to have multiple clinicians on our team with this advanced skill set.

Investing in continuing education in assessment and hands-on techniques means we continue to bring high-quality, up-to-date care back to our patients.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our former physiotherapist, Mikaela Barnes.

Mikaela passed away on March 7th at the age of 31 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was an integral part of the Royal City Physio team, and will be remembered for her warmth, dedication, and the care she brought to both her patients and colleagues.

We extend our deepest love and condolences to Stephen Baker and Mikaela’s family.

She will be greatly missed by all of us 🧡 xx

A simple place to start when it comes to core strength and low back support.

In this reel, our physiotherapist Paige Payne walks through a progression of exercises beginning with transverse abdominus (TA) activation and building to more challenging variations.

The transverse abdominus is your deepest core muscle. It helps provide stability to the spine and plays an important role in supporting the low back during movement. Improving how this muscle activates can make a meaningful
difference in control and load through the back.

Exercises shown:
▪️ TA Activation – 2 x 10
▪️ TA Activation + Knee Fall Outs – 2 x 10/side
▪️ Dead Bug – 2 x 10
▪️ Dead Bug (straight legs) – 2 x 10
▪️ Dead Bug + Band Tension – 2 x 10

Focus on controlled movement and steady breathing. Start at a level that feels manageable and build from there.

If you’re dealing with low back pain and not sure where to begin, this is a good starting point.

4 Facts About Low Back Pain 👇

1️⃣ Imaging isn’t always the answer.
Low back pain is often non-specific, and scans can show “findings” that aren’t actually the source of your symptoms. In many cases, we focus on treating symptoms and improving function before jumping to imaging.

2️⃣ Movement matters.
We weren’t built to sit all day. Prolonged sitting can aggravate back pain, while regular movement helps keep the spine supported and adaptable. Even simple pelvic tilts or standing breaks at your desk can make a difference.

3️⃣ Hamstring and Hip Flexor tension plays a role.
Tight hamstrings and hip flexors can limit hip movement, which may increase strain on the low back during bending and lifting. Improving flexibility and hip mobility can reduce unnecessary load on the spine.

4️⃣ Stress and back pain are connected.
Stress can increase muscle tension and pain sensitivity, especially in the low back. Addressing sleep, recovery, and stress management is often an important part of treatment.

At Royal City Physio, learning doesn’t stop once we’re in practice — it’s part of the profession.

Physiotherapy is truly a “forever learning” career, and continuing education is how we continue to grow our skills and provide the best care possible. Manual therapy is one of the most sought-after treatment approaches, and advanced training is completed in progressive levels to further refine assessment and hands-on techniques.

This spring, Chris, Diego, and Paige are taking on their Level 2 Lower Extremity manual therapy course to continue building their skill sets as MSK clinicians. We’re looking forward to bringing those advanced techniques back to the clinic and to our patients.

Chris, Jayme, and Paige have really enjoyed supporting the PWHL Goldeneyes this season. It’s been great to watch high-level women’s hockey and be part of the community backing these athletes. It's been a strong season all around and a great reason for our team to get together outside of the clinic!

Next game is at 1pm, March 1st at the Pacific Coliseum!

This is what sport physiotherapy can look like in the clinic.

Targeted drills, movement training, and sport-specific progressions.

Sport PT is an important part of rehabilitation for athletes, helping build confidence and expose the body to sport-specific stresses in a controlled environment before returning to play. Beyond what you see here, we guide athletes through return-to-play progressions — from non-contact to full contact sport — and can communicate with coaching staff to support the entire return-to-sport journey.
