The Beauty of Braid
A line up of pens - worn, varied and ready. These are the quiet tools of practice, the sometimes overlooked symbols of process.

At Braid, beauty isn’t just in the art that is made; it’s in the way the light hits a desk, the smidge of charcoal on a thumb, the simple stillness of creative tools waiting to be picked up again.

“As the founder of Braid Studios and an artist myself, I choose resident artists not just for talent but for community spirit. I ask “How can I help this artist grow? Who should they meet? What might their interactions with our community spark for them?”

At Braid Studios, it is never just about filling space. It’s about building community, fostering collaboration and helping individual artists find their next steps.

Framing Studio Opportunity
Are you ready to launch your own custom framing business—but without the cost of equipment or space?

We’re offering a fully equipped framing studio inside our public-facing Braid Loft location in New Westminster. You bring the initiative; we provide the tools and training from an experienced framer.

This is perfect for:
🔹 A recent art school grad
🔹 A retired craftsperson or woodworker
🔹 An artist or maker looking for a side hustle
🔹 Anyone detail-oriented and ready to build something of their own

Choose your own business model:
🔹 Revenue share
🔹 Flat monthly fee
🔹 Free to start, % split after 3 months

We’re looking for a proactive, independent go-getter—someone who wants to grow their own client base and create something beautiful. This is NOT a job—this is a business opportunity. You’ll be running your own show, building your own clientele, and turning your skills into income.

Introducing Jennie Johnson

I’m Jennie, an artist living outside Vancouver BC, Canada. I live with my family on a beautiful mountain surrounded by large trees, trails, and black bears who we see often in summer.

I make mixed media textile work, mostly quilt based with themes around identity, nature, and spirit.

I am an avid reader, reading around 75 books a year. I make videos about the books I read on my YouTube channel and consider reading a huge part of my artistic practice. Many of the pieces I make are informed by research and deep learning, especially around issues of being a settler living on unceded Indigenous lands.

Another important part of my practice is engaging community members with textile practices and learning. My goals are to display my work alongside community building events with galleries and museums. I would like everyone to feel that art is for them, and that they can interact with art institutions on their own terms without feeling intimidated or alienated.

Jennie will be part of our upcoming art show:

Today, on Indigenous Peoples Day we honour culture, connection, and resilience through art. We celebrate the richness and diversity of Indigenous voices, stories, and creativity that have been on Turtle Island from time immemorial.

This painting, Wild Prairie Rose, by Métis artist and Braid Studios founder Susan L. Greig celebrates the wild rose—a powerful symbol in Cree culture representing love, beauty, and the healing strength of nature.

At Braid Studios we are proud to be 100% Indigenous owned. Our roots, like the wild rose, run deep and strong.
