April is World Autism Month, an annual opportunity for dedicated conversations about autism spectrum disorder. According to Autism Speaks Canada, Autism touches more than 70 million people globally. Approximately 1 in 50 children and youth are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Canada and this number continues to grow. As a neurodiversity affirming parent, these stats are personal for me.
To all the caregivers on this journey, I know the journey of caring for a child with neurodivergent needs can be likened to climbing a mountain - it’s challenging, it’s exhilarating, and it’s filled with unexpected twists and turns because you’re climbing that mountain carrying an extra load. The long therapy sessions, the financial strain, the battles with the education system, the constant worry about the future - they can all seem overwhelming. You might often feel like you’re teetering on the edge, unsure of your footing, unable to see the path ahead.
I hope you can find a way to see the beauty also present in this journey. Each day, we get to experience love in its purest form - absolutely unfiltered. We learn about the strength of the human spirit, the power of persistence and perseverance and the joy in celebrating every small victory. We become fierce advocates, not just for our children, but for all individuals with special needs. We learn that while our journey may be tough, it is also filled with moments of triumph.
If you’re nodding your head and relate to this, follow along. The founding principle at BeYou with Candidar is acceptance. Our promise is that we will accept every individual as they are, embracing their needs as equal, valid, and whole. Together, let’s embark on a journey towards self-love and acceptance, recognizing that we are all enough, just as we are. 💛
With hope & optimism,
BeYou
