❄️ Protect Your Back This Winter ❄️
Shovelling snow is one of the most common causes of winter-related back injuries. Dr. Krista Klawitter shares her top chiropractic tips to help protect your spine and keep you moving safely all season long.
Top Snow Shovelling Tips for a Healthy Spine:
1️⃣ Stay Ahead of the Snow
Shovel more often during a storm. Smaller, frequent sessions are much easier on your spine than one heavy cleanup.
2️⃣ Choose the Right Shovel
Use a lightweight, pusher-style shovel to reduce strain on your back and shoulders.
Pro tip: Spray metal shovels with cooking spray so snow slides off effortlessly.
3️⃣ Push Instead of Throwing
Whenever possible, push snow to the side rather than lifting and tossing it. Twisting and throwing motions significantly increase the risk of disc injuries.
4️⃣ Use a Strong, Stable Stance
If lifting is unavoidable, bend at the knees, engage your legs, keep your back straight, and hold the load close to your body.
5️⃣ Warm Up First
Shovelling is a workout. A 10–15 minute walk or light stretching helps prepare your muscles and reduce injury risk.
6️⃣ Listen to Your Body
Take regular breaks and stop immediately if you feel back pain, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath.
✨ Why Maintenance Matters
Prevention is your best defence. Regular chiropractic care and proper posture help keep your body strong, resilient, and ready to handle winter’s demands.
Stay safe, stay warm, and take care of your spine this winter.
