(Re-post) Is It Challenging Behavior or
Sensory Seeking?
A lot of the parents I work with tell me that their child is constantly acting out or showing challenging behaviors that seem to come out of nowhere. One minute they’re playing, and the next they’re biting, hitting, throwing toys, or running around.

While challenging behavior can absolutely have behavioral causes, sensory seeking can also be a big reason behind these behaviors.

Many children are simply trying to regulate their bodies or get the sensory input they need.

That’s why it’s so important to separate the two, when we understand why a behavior is happening, we can support our kids in a way that actually helps them.

Here are a few common behaviors that may actually be sensory seeking.
And of course, if you’re ever unsure or feel your child needs additional support, seeing an occupational therapist can be incredibly helpful.

Understanding the why behind behavior can make a huge difference for your kiddos.

☕ Walking Into an OAP Determination of Needs Meeting?

This morning I’m heading into a three-hour OAP Determination of Needs meeting.

As a parent in this space myself… I know how heavy these meetings can feel.

As a psychotherapist who focuses on supporting families of children with autism… I also know how critical they are.

These meetings aren’t just about answering questions.
They’re about translating your child’s lived experience into funding categories.
They’re about articulating needs in a system that speaks in functional language.
They’re about making sure your child’s voice is heard — clearly, accurately, and fully.

And let’s be honest…
Trying to summarize your child’s daily struggles, strengths, sensory needs, emotional regulation challenges, social differences, executive functioning realities — all within a structured framework — is exhausting.

Many parents walk in unsure:
• What should I emphasize?
• What counts?
• How do I explain this in a way that reflects the true impact?
• Am I saying too much? Not enough? The wrong thing?

You don’t have to navigate this alone.

I support families in:
✔️ Understanding how their child’s presentation maps onto OAP functional categories
✔️ Clarifying language that reflects real impact without minimizing
✔️ Preparing for Determination of Needs meetings
✔️ Navigating services and funding streams with confidence

You are the expert on your child.
Sometimes you just need support translating that expertise into a system that understands it.

If you’re preparing for an OAP meeting and feeling overwhelmed, reach out. I’m here to help.
