Emotions can come as big waves and it’s tempting to try and avoid some of our emotions. However, neuroscience has shown that acknowledging our emotions while working on shifting some of our unhelpful negative thoughts to more realistic self talk can be a helpful way to strengthen our prefrontal cortex (executive function skills) and soothe our amygdala (fight/flight/freeze). This process allows us to develop new neural pathways and ultimately build resilience and strengthen our mental health.

Practices such as mindfulness meditation, exercise, and journaling and practicing shifting thoughts to be more realistic enhance neuroplasticity, thereby supporting long-term improvements in mental health conditions. Learning about and using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques can be very helpful in this process. We love teaching these skills with our clients.

This is a lifelong practice that can start from a young age, and can be strengthened and reinforced by those around us.

What are some good self-talk practices that you’ve learned along the way?

In our work with families, we often get asked about good books that can be of value in their journey. While there are tons of wonderful reads out there, this book is one of our favorites!
helps parents understand children’s developing brains and why we need time for our amygdala to soothe and calm before we can reason with others. It helps normalize our emotions and better understand why we need to connect and then shift and redirect. It is practical and it’s a valuable read, so if you haven’t read it yet do consider this for your summer read, it’s an oldie but a goodie!
