Vestibular rehab is a specialized form of physiotherapy used to treat vestibular or inner ear disorders. It can be beneficial for anyone experiencing vertigo, dizziness, and/or balance or vision issues!

Here at Prospect, your vestibular rehab assessment will begin by taking a thorough history of your symptoms and medical history, neurological testing, and objective tests using our NEW infrared goggles. We are so excited by the arrival of these goggles as they allow us to see eye movement that is often suppressed in room light, making our ability to interpret results and develop an appropriate treatment plan that much more accurate.

Following the assessment, treatment will involve maneuvers and progressive exercises designed to reduce your symptoms. Vestibular rehab can be very effective in treating the following conditions:
- BPPV
- Meniereโ€™s
- Vestibular neuritis
- Vestibular migraines
- Cervicogenic dizziness
- Post Concussion Syndrome
- POTS

Osteoporosis is a bone disease caused by the body losing too much bone, not making enough bone, or both. Bones become weak and can easily break.

Although it can happen at any age, it most commonly affects older adults, especially women.

Exercise is important for individuals who have osteoporosis, but there are certain positions that should be avoided due to the increased risk of fractures. Swipe through to see modifications of common movements and exercises that will benefit individuals with low bone mass or osteoporosis.

While feeding your baby can be a precious time where bonding occurs, it can also be a literal ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ธ. ๐Ÿค•

It takes a surprising amount of effort to hold a baby for a prolonged period, which often leads to compensations and the formation of bad habits. Anyone else guilty of slouching down into a comfy couch, twisting your body or crossing your legs, and/or staring at your beautiful baby the whole time you feed?!

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธI AM (and so is my husband๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ)!

โœ… To help with some of the aches and pains, try to:
- put a pillow behind you so your neck and back are supported
- recline so your back is supported and so the weight of the baby is pressed into your body rather than you having to lift up to support through your arms
- put the baby on a nursing pillow for added support (helps to elevate the baby to you if youโ€™re breastfeeding!)
- switch sides each time you feed

No better time to make this announcement than on Baby Charlotteโ€™s 1st Birthday!! Maternity leave has come to an end and Taylor is happy to share the news that she will be opening up her schedule. Starting next week, she will be at the clinic Monday through Thursday.

Taylor works with a variety of clientele from young kids to older adults, moms, dads, high performance athletes, and those just wanting to get rid of their pain! She is the physiotherapist for the Canadian Equestrian Team and dabbles in research projects on the side involving individuals who have Parkinsonโ€™s Disease.

There is no better way to end baton twirling week than by featuring this local legend. Big shoutout to .ward - a local baton twirler with an incredible resume. She is a 5x CNBTA Canadian National Team Member and 14x CNBTA Grand National Champion. While we miss having her around, she is currently living her dream as a Feature Twirler for the University of Memphis. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Sydney is incredibly talented and BEYOND humble. So, here we are bragging for her. Check out a list of her impressive accomplishments below. ๐Ÿ‘

A dynamic warm-up involves the movement of limbs throughout their natural range of motion to increase your heart rate and blood flow, warm your muscles, and prime the neuromuscular system to prepare you for your sport ๐Ÿ‘Œ

It is so important to include a proper sport-specific warm-up to help reduce the risk of injury. You should also incorporate strength and conditioning to your program and have consistent access to a health care provider, like a physiotherapist. Athletes are judged on technical skills, proficiency of body and baton techniques, and their performance qualities. Overuse injuries are common in this group due to the high volume of repetitive movements that goes into perfecting each skill๐Ÿ‘Œ

At Prospect Physiotherapy, we believe that understanding the ins and outs of our athletesโ€™ sports and the demands placed on their bodies is necessary for a complete rehab experience. After working with a number of national level athletes from , baton twirling has become a sport that we are now very familiar with. Between the fun of illusion demonstrations, looking through pageant pictures, and hosting mock interviews, we have also learned about the toll that the sport can take on the body ๐Ÿค•

Through the sprains, strains, and broken bones, we can confirm that ๐“๐‡๐„ ๐Œ๐Ž๐’๐“ ๐‚๐Ž๐Œ๐Œ๐Ž๐ ๐ˆ๐๐‰๐”๐‘๐ˆ๐„๐’ that baton twirlers experience are recurrent overuse injuries of the hip and low back musculature. Tendinopathy

Is an overuse injury that is associated with both pain and structural changes in a tendon.

The result is a tendon that is less capable of sustaining repeated tensile load.

Common areas of tendinopathy include:
- Achilles tendon
- Patellar tendon
- Rotator cuff
- Extensor tendinopathy
- Flexor tendinopathy

Although the exact cause is still unclear, repeated loading is a common contributing factor.

Recovery from a tendinopathy can certainly be frustrating as it can commonly impact sleep, occupational duties, and sometimes take several months to heal.

Unfortunately, there arenโ€™t any quick fixes so this week weโ€™re going to do our best to provide some reassurance and direction on how to best manage a tendinopathy and support you on your rehab journey.

How do we properly ACTIVATE the pelvic floor?

Learning to activate your pelvic floor is critical to develop proper โ€œcore strengthโ€. We arenโ€™t talking about your nice outer six pack here, weโ€™re talking about the TRUE core muscles. The pelvic floor muscles work in conjunction with the diaphragm, transverse abdominis (your deepest ab muscle) and multifidus (a muscle running along the spine) to stabilize the core and support all of your internal organs. It is important to learn how to isolate and activate each muscle before you work at combining them all together in larger global movements.

How do we isolate the pelvic floor?

Itโ€™s important to start by lying on your back so that your body is relaxed and your body can focus on one muscle at a time. Bend your knees up and keep your feet flat on the floor.

Think about stopping the flow of urine or pulling a small berry up through your urethra at the same time as thinking about doing the same with your re**um and a**s. If you are only feeling a contraction at the front of your pelvic floor then you are not fully activating all of those important muscles in the back of the pelvis

Once youโ€™ve mastered this, try doing the same in standing. You can progress by adding in some deep diaphragmatic breathing.
