Slow It Down to Heal Faster

Faster isn’t always better. Sometimes controlled is.

After an injury, how you move matters as much as the exercises you do. One of the most overlooked approaches relates to slowing things down. By taking 3–5 seconds during the lowering phase of an exercise, you increase muscle engagement, improve control, and place a more appropriate load on healing tissues. This phase—called the eccentric phase—is especially valuable for rebuilding strength and resilience.

Slowing down also helps your brain reconnect with the movement. After an injury, coordination often takes a hit. Moving with control restores confidence and reduces the risk of compensating or re-injuring the area.

Quick, rushed reps can hide weaknesses. Slow reps expose and strengthen them.

It might feel less intense, but don’t be fooled—this is where real progress happens.

If your exercises feel too easy, don’t add more weight yet. Try slowing them down first.

Small but Often Wins

5 minutes, 3 times a day beats 30 minutes once.

When it comes to injury recovery, consistency matters more than intensity. Many people think they need long rehab sessions to make progress—but the body responds better to frequent, manageable input.

Short sessions done multiple times per day help reinforce movement patterns, improve circulation, and prevent stiffness from creeping back in. Even just 3–5 minutes, repeated a few times daily, can create meaningful progress.

This approach also reduces the risk of overloading the injury. Instead of doing too much in one session and feeling worse the next day, you give your body steady, controlled exposure to movement.

It’s also easier to stick with. A few minutes in the morning, a quick session mid-day, and another in the evening is far more sustainable than trying to carve out a long block of time.

Recovery isn’t about big efforts—it’s about repeated ones.

If your rehab routine feels overwhelming, try shrinking it. You might actually get better results.

Dizziness is one of the most misunderstood symptoms. It's very subjective - meaning different things to different people - it can be interpreted as anything from being lightheaded to feeling like your head is spinning. Dizziness is a bit of a goto term for a multitude of sensations like vertigo, fainting, imbalance and lightheadedness.

Some key distinctions between symptoms:

Lightheadedness: feeling like fainting or blacking out, often caused by a sudden drop in blood flow - like when you stand up too quickly.

Vertigo: a spinning feeling, as if your surroundings are moving, often linked to inner ear issues.

Disequilibrium: a sense of imbalance (unsteadiness), usually when walking, often related to problems with your nervous system or sensory input.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a special form of therapeutic exercise, delivered by a trained physiotherapist, that can be especially helpful with the symptoms described.

Breaking a bone after 50, might be more than bad luck - it could be osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is known as the “silent thief” because it weakens bones slowly without symptoms. For many people, the first warning sign is a fracture from something simple like bending, coughing, or a minor fall.

These fragility fractures commonly affect the hip, spine, wrist, or shoulder and can seriously impact independence and quality of life.

Another hidden warning sign is height loss. Losing 2 cm or more over time may indicate a spine fracture—even without pain.

Pay attention to these early signs and protect your bone health before the next fracture happens.

4 simple ways to protect your bone health:

1. Strength & Weight-Bearing Exercise
Activities like walking, resistance training, and jumping help stimulate bone growth and maintain bone density.

2. Get Enough Calcium
Calcium is the main building block of bone. Include foods like dairy, leafy greens, almonds, and fortified products.

3. Maintain Healthy Vitamin D Levels
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Sun exposure, fatty fish, eggs, and supplements can help maintain levels.

4. Build Balance and Stability
Improving balance and coordination reduces the risk of falls, which are a major cause of fractures.

What if your pain isn’t something to silence… but something your body needs you to hear?

Pain is often your body’s early warning system. It signals that something isn’t moving, healing, or functioning the way it should be. While most quickly turn to medication to reduce discomfort, it may also mask the message your body is trying to deliver. If the underlying cause—such as muscle imbalance, joint restriction, poor movement patterns, terminal illness—is ignored, the problem can worsen over time. Paying attention to pain allows you to investigate what’s actually happening and correct it before it becomes a larger injury. Physiotherapy focuses on identifying and treating the root cause, not just quieting the symptoms, so your body can recover properly and move stronger, safer, and more efficiently.
