After getting her first shot in the big leagues last Thursday and making some history along the way, athletic trainer Aisha Visram reflected on the weight of her NHL moment and the importance of representation in the hockey world.

What a year (in more ways than one)!
Move Athletic Therapy started as a response to losing my job and trying to pivot (the word of 2020) so that I could continue to do what I love to do!
Moving forwards (see what I did there), I am going to be adding more content, more and more information about the role of the Athletic Therapist, as well as different injuries, issues and how to help them!
Thank you for following along, and I look forwards to what 2021 has in store. Please feel free to reach out if you are in need of an appointment to treat your strains, sprains, fractures, post op, or any other pain you may be experiencing. Can’t wait to MOVE with you in 2021!

2015 Toronto Pan Am Games
In 2015, Toronto hosted the Pan Am Games and I had the pleasure to work on site as host medical with the field hockey event. In this role, I met so many different practitioners from the GTA and have the chance to be host medical at a large, international event! It was fantastic to see athletes from around the world compete in my home city!

It is no secret that I loved school!
In order to be a Certified Athletic Therapist in Canada, you have to attend one of the eight accredited institutions (Camosun, Mt Royal University, University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, York University, Sheridan College, Concordia University or Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières), and then upon graduation pass the National Certification Exam (NCE). I was lucky, the York program at the time was only two years long, due to the fact I already had an undergraduate degree (Bleed Blue always ). In the programs you learn the theoretical knowledge and the hands-on skills to become certified!
After certifying and finishing my program at York, I was not yet ready to be done school, and went on to complete my Masters of Science in the field of Rehabilitation Science. The profession of Athletic Therapy is focusing on evidence-based practice, and this program (although I didn’t know it at the time) was a perfect compliment to that! Finally, five years later I am putting my Masters to teaching use, and helping out with the Sheridan College fourth year Independent Research Course, where I am acting as a mentor to 10 students!
Have you ever considered becoming an Athletic Therapist? If you have questions about the profession, feel free to reach out!

Heartbeat of Home
My passion has always been working with dancers, as I grew up dancing classical ballet. I actually ended up stopping due to injury (I wasn’t treated by an AT), and now want to educate the community I spent so many years participating in! In 2014 I landed a dream job working at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto as the AT on site with the show, Heartbeat of Home, a creation by the producers of Riverdance! This group of dancers and production was one of the most fun, unique and special moments of my AT career. This show brought together Celtic dance, flamenco, hip hop, lyrical and so much more, and had a cast from all around the world! To this day, it is an experience I have never forgotten!

Sometimes Certified Athletic Therapists get asked to help out in unique ways. This is one of those situations. A head coach I was working with at the time was also part of the player development staff with the LA Kings the year they won the Stanley Cup. As per tradition, every member of the team receives a ring. Well that particular day at practice this team was doing a media day and the coach had brought it to wear for the media portion, but couldn’t wear it on the ice for practice after the fact. It then became my job to be keeper of the ring, on top of maintaining player safety, and athlete prep for the day!

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing special moments in my Athletic Therapy career as part of a throwback Thursday post!
George Brown Huskies Provincial Gold 2020
This was a really special moment for the school as it was the first time the George Brown Huskies had won the provisional title since 1976! It was also the week before the world shut down due to COVID.

A tradition of winning championships is that each member of the team (including the AT) cuts a piece of the net that they won on. The head coach cuts the final piece, and then puts the remaining net over their head. It was a fun way to end a championship weekend!

Feeding off the last post, this is a version of my field set up.

Massage Table
Field Kit
F***y Pack
Hand Sanitizer
All the COVID paperwork
Snacks
Depending on your event, we cater the field set up to what you need! This can include warm up and cool down tools, like bands, foam rollers, pylons, etc; to also including a cooler filled with ice (lucky me this rink has lots of it)!
