Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home â Playter Chapel was honoured to welcome the Business Womenâs Network of York Region for an evening of history, conversation, and connection inside Newmarketâs oldest business.
As part of the evening, Juliana Playter shared the story of Roadhouse & Rose, tracing its roots back to 1842, when Samuel Roadhouse established the business that would grow alongside the Town of Newmarket itself.
A meaningful focus of the presentation was the role of the women and families who helped carry this legacy forward through each generation.
From Mildred Roadhouse-Rose, daughter of founder Samuel Roadhouse, who ran the business alongside her husband, Lyman Rose, to Wray and Elsie Playter, then Glenn and Jackie Playter , and now Wes and Juliana Playter. Each chapter of Roadhouse & Rose has been shaped not only by those who led the firm, but by the women who stood beside them.
Although Glenn is no longer with us, Jackie Playter remains a familiar and active presence in the community, continuing a long tradition of service, connection, and involvement. Alongside this continued presence, Juliana Playter represents the next chapter of that same tradition, helping maintain the funeral homeâs connection to the people, causes, and history of Town of Newmarket .
Across generations, the women connected to Roadhouse & Rose have shared a common thread: a desire to know the community, support it with care, and be part of its evolution. As Newmarket has grown and changed, Roadhouse & Rose has grown with it, remaining not only a place of service for families, but a trusted part of the townâs civic and social fabric.
It was a beautiful evening of shared stories, local history, womenâs leadership, and community spirit.
