When the right people come together with a shared purpose, powerful change happens.

This year’s Southlake Power of Many Champion Award recipients — the Sepsis Task Force and Working Group — exemplify what collaboration can achieve. Formed through the quality-of-care process, this interprofessional team came together quickly to address the urgent need to better identify and prevent patient deterioration related to sepsis.

Bringing together physicians, leaders, educators, allied health, professional practice, and quality experts, the team set aside individual perspectives to focus on best practices and patient safety. Within just four months, they developed and implemented a comprehensive strategy to support frontline teams and improve early detection and management of sepsis.

Their work is a powerful reminder that complex challenges are best solved through partnership, shared decision-making, and a collective commitment to saving lives.

Innovation in care is often about seeing a gap, then building a better way forward.

This year’s Southlake Champion Awards Courage to Think Differently Award recipients, Dr. Allison Ransom and Devon Curran, have helped grow the Aging Well Clinic into a regional hub for community non-malignant palliative care, improving access for an underserved population across our communities.

Through thoughtful program and process improvements, they introduced standardized assessment and documentation tools to support consistent, high-quality care, and strengthened internal and external partnerships to better connect patients and families with the support they need.

Their work helps ensure people living with life-limiting illness receive timely palliative care and feel supported as their needs change, regardless of diagnosis.

Compassion is shown through presence, connection, and the courage to truly see people.

This year’s Southlake Champion Awards Always with Compassion Award recipient, Ramita Hirmez, brings care and kindness to every interaction in her role as a Patient Services Partner. Known for her ability to connect deeply with patients, Ramita looks beyond language, diagnosis, or circumstance to build trust and help people feel safe, respected, and supported.

Through her encouragement and intuitive approach, Ramita empowers patients to maintain independence and actively participate in their care. Her warmth, empathy, and infectious smile have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many and have helped foster a culture of compassion on her unit.

2025 marked the one-year anniversary of Southlake Health’s Acute Care of the Elderly Unit. In the first year, the unit served more than 750 senior patients and clients, helping them age in place, and stay in the home they love as long as they can.
