Are you looking for ways to support your immune system?

As the cold and flu season is upon us, it is important for us to do simple things in our daily lives to help strengthen our immune system and minimize our chances of getting sick.

Consider the following in your daily lives:

· Get adequate sleep – Getting enough sleep is important to restore health as the body does its best healing and detoxification during sleep.

· Eat whole foods – Eating whole foods and a balanced diet of protein, fruits and vegetables and healthy grains and fats will give the body the necessary nutrients for a healthy immune system.

· Drink plenty of fluids, especially water – Drinking plenty of water (ideally 6-8 cups) is very important for overall health and cleansing out toxins in the body. Can also include warm broths and healthy herbal teas, but limit sugary drinks.

· Limit sugars – Refined sugars are found in desserts, sweet treats and other processed foods. Refined sugars have been found in studies to weaken the immune system for several hours after consumption and decrease your immune system’s ability to fight off infections.

· Stress support – Getting support for stress through family, friends, exercise, and stress relieving activities are important as high stress, fear and worry will all weaken the immune system. Practice deep breathing and positive thinking daily to help with managing stress.

· Exercise regularly – Regular exercise helps reduce stress, increase blood flow and also strengthens antibodies, all leading to a healthier immune system.

· Consider taking quality supplements – Vitamins C, D, E, Zinc and probiotics are some of the many nutrients that are beneficial for a strong immune system. Include natural antimicrobial herbs preventatively as well if you are prone to getting sick. Talk to a Naturopathic doctor for optimal dosing depending on your health condition.

With the hot weather we have been having lately, a lot of patients have been asking us "How much water should we drink".

It depends on your size and weight, and also on your activity level and where you live, in general, you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day. If you’re living in a hot climate and exercising a lot, you’d be on the higher end of that range; if you’re in a cooler climate and mostly sedentary, you’d need less.

Another quick way to check: look in the bowl after you’ve gone to the bathroom. If your urine is clear or very light yellow and has little odor, you’re well hydrated. The darker and more aromatic your urine, the more dehydrated you are.

How can you build more water consumption into your day? Try these tips:

Carry an insulated sports bottle with you and fill it up periodically.

Keep a glass of water on your desk at work.

Keep another glass next to your bed. Many of us wake up dehydrated first thing in the morning.

Switch one glass of soda or cup of coffee for a glass of water.

Drink small amounts of water throughout the day. Six glasses all at once isn’t good for you!

You know what you want from your running shoes: light weight, cushioning, support, and a comfortable fit. Of course, the most important part of any shoe is your experience over the hundreds of miles you’ll take it on.

With Warmer weather around the corner I am being asked what's the best shoe for me. And the answer really depends on a number of factors.

A. What you plan to train
B. Foot mechanics
C. Where your foot needs support

The 4 shoes I have picked cover different training, foot types and foot supports built

Happy training
